Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-2 win over the first-place Burlington Bees in front of 7,214 fans at O'Brien Field on Friday night. The win improves the Chiefs to 24-23 in the second half and 54-61 on the season and also puts them 4 ½ games behind the Bees.

A day after being shutout and no-hit, the Chiefs were first on the scoreboard in the second inning against Burlington starter Luis Cota. Luis Bautista picked up the first Peoria hit in 13 2/3 innings with a double off the left-center field wall, and he stole third base when Brandon Guyer walked. With runners at the corners and only one out, Guyer stole second base. Ryan Eigsti's throw was dropped by Juan Rivera allowing Bautista to score and Guyer to move the third to put the Chiefs in front 1-0. Guyer scored when Eigsti's pickoff throw to third hit him in the back and caromed into left. After consecutive walks by Cota to Rebel Ridling and Luis Flores, the Chiefs scored their first run of the inning via a hit when Nate Samson blooped a single just fair down the right field line to plate Ridling and extend the lead to 3-0. Cota got out of the frame as Jake Opitz bounced out to second to leave two runners on base.

Burlington responded in the third inning against Chiefs starter Casey Coleman. Nick Van Stratten walked to start the inning and moved to second on Juan Rivera's ground out. Eigsti followed with a base hit to put runners at first and third. David Lough lined a RBI base hit into center field to score Van Stratten and cut the Chiefs lead to 3-1. Coleman escaped the inning when Johnny Giavotella bounced into a 6-4-3 double play.

The Chiefs added to their lead against reliever Tony Bradley in the sixth. Rosa singled with one out and was erased on a fielders choice off the bat of Bautista. Guyer then lined a two-run homer into the left-field berm for a 5-1 Chiefs lead. The blast, Guyer's 11th of the season, bounced in and out of the Kelleher's Pot O'Gold to win all fans in attendance a free order of wings with any purchase at Kelleher's Irish Pub and Eatery before August 15.

Burlington used a two-out rally against Chiefs reliever Zach Ashwood to narrow the gap in the seventh. Rivera lined a single in front of a diving Jonathan Wyatt in center to start the rally. Eigsti singled to left, and Rivera scored on a bloop single to right by David Lough to cut the lead to 5-2. Ashwood got Giavotella to line out to shortstop to end the inning with runners at the corners.

The Chiefs blew the game wide open in the eighth inning against Bees reliever Paul Raglione. Opitz walked to start the inning and went to second on a Rosa base knock. Guyer drove in his third run of the night with an infield single to short to extend the lead to 6-2. Rebel Ridling snapped a 0-for-31 streak with a two-run single to left field to score both Rosa and Guyer to make it an 8-2 Peoria lead. The Chiefs were not done scoring with two outs as Luis Flores tripled off the wall in left field to score two runs and make it a 10-2 lead.

Coleman tossed a career-high six innings and allowed just one run on four hits. The 21-year-old walked three and struck out four. Ashwood allowed one run on four hits over his one inning of work. Jake Muyco tossed a perfect eighth inning in his only inning of work. Steve Vento worked the ninth inning and allowed one hit.

Player of the Game - Brandon Guyer (LF) - Guyer hit his seventh homer at O'Brien Field this season and drove in two to lead the Chiefs offense. He also walked, stole two bases and scored in the three-run second and a five run eighth. Brandon finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI.
