Bandits Swept In Cedar Rapids

Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits are looking forward to a return to Modern Woodmen Park on Saturday, as their losing streak reached five games with a 3-1 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Quad Cities (24-23, 57-54) could not capitalize on another strong effort by starter Nick Additon, as the River Bandits have scored just four runs during the losing streak and were swept in a full series for the first time all season. Cedar Rapids (26-20, 58-56) got a dominant starting performance from Esmerlin Jimenez, as the Kernels finished their season series against Quad Cities with an 11-4 record overall and a 9-2 mark at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Cedar Rapids' starting pitching was the story of the series, a trend that continued with Jimenez' (5-6) impressive outing on Friday. The 24-year-old Dominican racked up 11 strikeouts over eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits and four walks. That included a streak beginning in the fourth inning in which he notched six consecutive strikeouts and seven during an eight-batter stretch. Over the course of the four-game set the Kernels' starters combined to go 4-0 with a 0.29 ERA, registering 30 strikeouts and allowing just one earned run.

Meanwhile, Nick Additon (9-5) suffered a tough-luck loss despite throwing seven solid frames for the fourth time in his last five starts. The 20-year-old southpaw from Florida allowed two runs on four hits while fanning five over seven frames. After giving up singles to the first two batters he faced, Additon was touched for just two hits the rest of the way.

The Kernels got off to a quick start with back-to-back singles by Jeremy Moore and Andrew Romine in the bottom of the first. After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Clay Fuller lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Moore for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Carlos Pupo evened the score with one swing of the bat. The powerful 22-year-old took a 1-0 pitch and blasted it the other way for his third homer of the year, clearing the fence in right center for a 1-1 ballgame.

That score held until the top of the seventh, as Additon had allowed just one hit since the first inning when Hector Estrella stepped up to lead off the seventh. But Estrella belted a solo shot that left the yard to left-center and put the Kernels ahead by a 2-1 score.

Quad Cities threatened to tie the game with a two-out rally in the eighth, as Adron Chambers and Ross Oeder drew consecutive walks to bring slugger Brett Wallace to the plate. But Kernels' manager Keith Johnson left Jimenez in to face the 13th overall pick in the 2008 draft, and after a battle of an at-bat the hurler was able to paint the inside corner on a 3-2 pitch to get out of the jam.

Cedar Rapids added an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, as Moore reached on an infield single and rounded the bases on an error and two wild pitches to push the lead to 3-1. Tom Kiely (2) came on to pick up the save in the ninth, fanning two of the three batters he faced to clinch the Kernels' win.
