Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels took out some of their frustrations from the past road trip on the Burlington Bees with a 15-3 win at Perfect Game Field on Wednesday night. The Kernels scored 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, capped by a grand slam by Terrell Alliman that won Mike Schweitzer of Cedar Rapids $10,000 as part of Mix 96.5 FM/WMT AM 600 Winning Wednesday.
The Bees roughed up Kernels starter Max Russell (2-3) for three runs in the first inning with a lead off home run by Whit Merrifield and a two run shot by Carlo Testa two batters later. But Russell settled down and allowed those three runs on five hits and struck out six over 7 IP for the win. Suammy Baez and Young-Il Jung combined to work the final two innings.
Burlington starter Matt Mitchell (1-9) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over 4 IP. But it was Rodolfo Encarnacion and Starling De La Rosa that faced the brunt of the Kernels 11 run fifth inning. Encarnacion allowed five runs on one hit and walked four in facing five batters and De La Rosa gave up six runs on three hits and walked three over an inning including the grand slam to Alliman.
Alliman finished the game 1-2 with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored. He was a pinch runner for Jon Karcich, who was struck by a pitch in the fourth inning and had to leave the game. Carlos Ramirez went 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI and Casey Haerther was 1-4 with 2 RBI.
The Kernels and Bees continue their three game series on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. It's Fan Appreciation Night as the Kernels say 'thank you' to our fans for a great 2010 season.
