Burlington Bees News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA (September 1, 2010) - The Bees' chances looked bright on Wednesday night after blasting two home runs in the first inning, but a huge fifth inning put the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front for good on their way to a 15-3 win at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Whit Merrifield dropped the game's third pitch just over the left field fence for his fourth home run since joining the Bees. It gave the visiting club an early 1-0 lead. After an Alex McClure single, Carlo Testa followed Merrifield's lead by hooking his team-leading 12th big fly of the year to put his team up by the three.
The lead proved short-lived, however, as the Kernels battled back for four runs against Bees starter Matt Mitchell (L, 1-9), chasing him from the game after just four innings. The home team already sported a one-run lead when they came to the plate for the biggest inning any Bees opponent has put together this season. They were aided in their pursuit by seven Bees walks, including four from Rodolfo Encarnacion to open the frame. Starling De La Rosa followed, and did not fare much better, walking three with three hits and serving up the night's signature moment, a grand slam to Terrell Alliman that made it an 11-run inning.
Ironically, the previous high for runs scored in an inning by a Bees opponent also came at Veterans Memorial Stadium when the Kernels plated 10 in the first inning of the final game of the first half on June 20th.
Ben Theriot provided one of the few bright spots for the Bees in first inning when he served a double into the left field corner. It extended the catcher's hitting streak to nine games, tying him with Joey Lewis and Rene Oriental for the longest by a Bee in 2010.
The Bees head to Cedar Rapids to take on the Kernels again on Thursday night. Join Nick Devlin on News Radio 1490 KBUR at 6:20 for the pregame show.
