LANSING, Mich. - Balbino Fuenmayor went 3-for-4 with a key two-run single and Drew Hutchison struck out seven batters in five shutout innings, helping the Lansing Lugnuts (30-35; 66-68) keep their slim hopes alive with a 3-1 triumph over the West Michigan Whitecaps (34-31; 60-74).

The Whitecaps' magic number for clinching a playoff berth remained 2, while the Lugnuts pulled within four games of West Michigan in the Eastern Division with five games to play.

The 20-year-old Hutchison (1-2) earned his first victory at the Midwest League level, putting forth a mesmerizing performance while limiting the Caps to a pair of singles and a pair of walks.

Fuenmayor led off the fourth inning with a double off of Victor Larez (8-11), scoring the first run of the game on an Oliver Dominguez RBI double.

The first baseman struck again three innings later, lining a two-out, two-run single for a 3-0 Lugnuts lead.

The Whitecaps reached Casey Lawrence for a run on Corey Jones' RBI double in the eighth, but the reliever retired Wade Gaynor and Tony Plagman with the tying runs in scoring position to end the threat.

Lawrence pitching four innings in all to collect his first save, allowing four hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

The game was completed in a speedy two hours and 18 minutes.

The Lugnuts resume their series with the Whitecaps on the final Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday of the season. Lefty Egan Smith (6-4, 4.78) gets the start for the Lugs against Caps right-hander Luis Angel Sanz (4-6, 5.29).

Tickets to the final two Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
