Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Ryan Weigand's single to center field brought in the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning as the Bowling Green Hot Rods spoiled an outstanding starting performance by Dayton pitcher Edinson Volquez by defeating the Dragons 5-3 on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.

Volquez, optioned to Dayton on Tuesday by the Cincinnati Reds, worked the first seven innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run with one walk and nine strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision.

Reds shortstop Orlando Cabrera also played in the game for the Dragons, going 0 for 3 as the Dayton shortstop. He is on a Major League injury rehabilitation assignment.

The Hot Rods broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning against Volquez when they scored on a two-out, third strike passed ball. Julio Cedeno and Mark Thomas each delivered singles to start the inning and a ground ball double play off the bat of Burt Reynolds moved Cedeno to third. Volquez got Dave Wendt to swing and miss at a high fastball for a strikeout, but the ball glanced off the glove of catcher Mark Fleury as Cedeno scored to make it 1-0.

The Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Josh Garton singled, went to second on an error, and scored on Frank Pfister's RBI hit to left to make it 1-1.

Volquez left after seven innings and Bowling Green took the lead in the eighth against reliever Josh Smith, scoring three runs to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Weigand's RBI single with one out broke the 1-1 tie, and Mark Thomas later added a two-out, two-run single to make it 4-3.

The Dragons battled back in the bottom of the eighth. Justin Reed hit the first pitch of the inning for a home run to right field, his second homer of the year. Ronald Torreyes followed with a bunt single. Fleury singled to right and Torreyes raced around to third. When the throw from right field went astray, Torreyes scored to make it 4-3 and Fleury went to second with no one out. But the Dragons could not get him in and went to the ninth inning still down by a run.

Bowling Green's Dustin Biell belted a home run with two outs and the bases empty in the ninth to make it 5-3 and close out the scoring.

The Dragons (21-43, 51-82) host Bowling Green on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the second game of the series. Jacob Johnson (8-6, 4.37) will start for Dayton. The game can be heard on Kiss Country 101.7 FM and on the internet at www.daytondragons.com.
