Blast From the Past

During the 1996-1997 season the South Carolina Stingrays won the first ever Kelly Cup, which had just replaced the Riley Cup presented to the ECHL champion. That year the Rays finished with a record of 45-15-10, good for 100 points, most in the ECHL. This marked the first time that a team had won the Brabham Cup, the trophy for the team with the most points, as well as the trophy awarded to the ECHL champion. With the help of defenseman Jared Bednar, and scoring champ Ed Courtenay, the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Louisiana Ice Gators in five games.
