Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (April 9, 2008) - The Trenton Devils announced today that six players have moved to the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League. Forwards Trevor Kell and Joe Rooney and defenseman Zach Tarkir were recalled on loan by the "AAA" club, while forward Eric Castonguay and defensemen Matt Cohen and Ryan Gunderson were signed to professional try-out agreements.
Kell, Rooney, and Tarkir return to Lowell after serving short stints with the squad earlier this year.
Both forwards were brought to Massachusetts on January 2nd, and both immediately excelled. Kell started his AHL career with a game-winning goal in his first contest and a five-game point streak (2g, 4a) thereafter. Rooney tallied three goals and six penalty minutes in 11 matches.
At Trenton, Kell and Rooney finished fifth and sixth in team scoring, with 36 (16g, 20a) and 35 (14g, 21a) points, respectively. Kell finished with a -9 rating and 77 penalty minutes in 61 games, while in 50 contests Rooney accumulated 31 penalty minutes and a -8 rating.
Tarkir began the year with Lowell before joining Trenton. During his ten-game stint with the team, the defenseman notched four assists and earned a -2 rating. While at Trenton, Tarkir put up 15 points (1g, 14a) and 32 penalty minutes in 49 matches.
The Fresno, CA native arrived in Massachusetts yesterday in time to be in the Devils' contest against Hartford. He earned an assist on former Trenton Devil Brad Mills' first career AHL goal.
Castonguay, Cohen, and Gunderson all enter the AHL for the first time.
Castonguay, the youngest member of the Devils' squad, tied for the lead in team scoring with 47 points (20g, 27a). The 20 year-old from Granby, QC finished the season on a hot streak by scoring goals in his last three games and tallying points in 13 of Trenton's last 16 contests.
Cohen and Gunderson both skated in all 72 of Trenton's games this season, but earned acclaims for their work on opposite ends of the rink.
Gunderson, a native of Bensalem, PA, was named this week to the ECHL's All-Rookie team for leading all rookie defensemen and coming in fourth overall in scoring (46 points, 4g, 42a). His 42 assists were also good for second amongst all ECHL defensemen.
The Vermont graduate was Trenton's representative at the ECHL 2007-08 All-Star Game, where he started for the American Conference and scored two assists.
Matt Cohen excelled on the other side of the ice, developing into one of the Devils' primary penalty killers and frontline defensive blue liners. His -1 rating was second amongst Trenton D-men and the New York, NY resident was consistently selected to be on the first five-on-three penalty kill shift.
Cohen also gained speed offensively towards the end of the season, scoring 14 points (4g, 12a) in the Devils' last 20 games. He finished the season with 22 points (5g, 17a) overall.
Tarkir was selected by the New Jersey Devils in round five (#167 overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Kell was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round (#131 overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Castonguay, Cohen, Gunderson and Rooney went undrafted.
The Trenton Devils have seen a lot of player movement with their AHL affiliate; Castonguay, Cohen, and Gunderson make it thirteen players who have split a season between Trenton and the Lowell Devils. Netminders Dave Caruso and Jason Smith, forwards Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and Benoit Mondou, and defensemen Jay Pemberton and Sean Zimmerman have also skated for both squads this season. Caruso, Letourneau-Leblond, Mondou, and Zimmerman remain with the AHL franchise.
Season tickets for the 2008-09 season are now available. For information log onto www.trentondevils.com or call 609-955-9500.
TRENTON DEVILS - The Trenton Devils are a member of the ECHL - North America's Premier "AA" Hockey League. The Trenton Devils are owned and operated by the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League.
