Metcalf named ECHL Defenseman of the Year
April 9, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Alaska veteran Peter Metcalf has been named ECHL Defenseman of the Year as determined in a vote of coaches around the league.
For the second straight season, the 29-year-old Metcalf led all defensemen in points and assists while earning first-team all-ECHL honors. His 53 helpers ranked third overall in the league while his 28 assists on the power play alone placed fourth. One of only 13 players to have his name engraved on the Kelly Cup twice (Alaska-2006, Atlantic City-2003) and one of only seven to be named first team all-ECHL in two straight years, Metcalf earned second team all-ECHL honors in 2006, the same year he led the league with a +44 rating.
Having just completed his sixth professional season, Metcalf will line up against his former team for the second year in a row in the playoffs, as Alaska opens its best-of-seven first round series tonight in Idaho at 5:10 p.m. ADT. The former University of Maine All-American played for the Steelheads during the 2004-05 season before joining the Aces for the first of his three years in Anchorage.
Goaltender Marek Schwarz, a former first round pick of St. Louis who won all six of his starts with the Aces in February to go along with a 2.08 GAA and a .924 save percentage, has been re-assigned to Alaska by the Blues for this series and will start in net tonight. Defenseman Ed Hill, out since March 21 due to an injury suffered in a 3-0 win at Las Vegas, will return to the lineup this evening.
Alaska won its last three games against Idaho this season to finish 5-5 head-to-head, most recently sweeping a pair from the Steelheads at Sullivan Arena March 4-5. Game Two at Qwest Arena in Boise will be held tomorrow at 5:10 p.m. ADT, with the series shifting to Anchorage for Games Three and Four Saturday and Sunday at 7:15 p.m. Game Five, if necessary, would be played at Sullivan Arena next Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. Games Six and Seven, if necessary would return to Boise.
2008 Kelly Cup playoff tickets are now on sale at the team offices at the corner of 15th and Gambell on weekdays between 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. All playoff games will be broadcast live on the flagship home of Aces hockey, AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
