Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review

November 28, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

The Kalamazoo Wings started their week on Wednesday (11/23), as they played the first part of a three-game road swing against the Flint Generals. The K-Wings power-play proved to be the difference going 3 for 11 in Kalamazoo's 5-2 victory. Defenseman Daniel Carriere had a breakout performance recording four points (1 goal, 3 assists) to lead all players in scoring.

The K-Wings road swing continued on Friday (11/25) with a date against the Rockford IceHogs. Kalamazoo jumped out to 3-0 lead and never looked back, as forward Kory Karlander netted 2 goals (6, 7) and added and assist to lead the K-Wings past the IceHogs 4-2. The victory by Kalamazoo gave Rockford their first home loss of the season.

Kalamazoo finished off their three-game road swing on Saturday (11/26) against the Motor City Mechanics. With the score 1-0 in favor of Motor City, forward Mike Manley (4) tied the game up for Kalamazoo with a power-play goal midway into the opening period. Despite tying the game at 1-1, the rest of the night belonged to the Mechanics. Motor City scored three unanswered goals that paved the way to a 4-1 victory over Kalamazoo. The loss snapped the K-Wings eight-game winning streak.

The K-Wings finished off the week with a Sunday (11/20) matinee versus the Flint Generals at Wings Stadium. Kalamazoo opened up the first period with two goals, including the eventual game-winner from Tyler Willis (4). Flint cut Kalamazoo's lead to a single goal early in the third with a goal from Leo Thomas (9); however, Joel Martin and Lee Ruff denied the Generals comeback. Martin was stellar between the pipes stopping 22 of 23 shots to earn his eighth victory of the season, while Ruff put the game on ice netting an insurance goal late in the third period to give the K-Wings a 3-1 victory over the Generals.

Fast Forward

Kalamazoo will take their show on the road for four straight games starting this Wednesday (11/30) against the Danbury Trashers. The K-Wings won the lone meeting between the teams this season 6-1 at Wings Stadium back on November 12th. Lifetime, Kalamazoo leads the series 3-1-1 over Danbury. The Trashers start the week in second place in the Eastern Division. The K-Wings and the Trashers will also face each other this Saturday (12/3) also at the Danbury Ice Arena.

On Friday (12/2), the K-Wings will head to the First Arena to face-off against the Elmira Jackals. Elmira starts the week in fifth place in the Eastern Division; however, the Jackals are only seven points out of second place. The K-Wings hold the edge in the all-time series over the Jackals with a record of 10-6-1.

Kalamazoo will conclude the week on Sunday (12/4), with a late afternoon contest against the Adirondack Frostbite. While their nickname gives a frigid impression, their play on the ice has been anything but. Adirondack is off to a 14-4-0 start and leads the Eastern Division by 10 points. Kalamazoo leads the all-time series over the Adirondack with a record of 8-6-1.

There's No Place Like Home

The K-Wings are a perfect 8-0-0 at home this season. The eight-game home winning streak is the longest current home winning streak in the league.

Road Warriors

Kalamazoo hits the road for a four-game road trip starting this Wednesday against the Danbury Trashers. The K-Wings will play six of their next seven games away from Wings Stadium.

Scoring First

The K-Wings have scored before their opponents in 14 of their 16 games this season. Kalamazoo is 13-1-0 when they score first in a game.

Nearing a Milestone

Forward Tyler Rennette could reach a personal milestone this week. Rennette needs just three points to reach 300 for his career.

The Obscure Stat of the Week

While the K-Wings have scored four times shorthanded this year, other teams haven't been so lucky. Kalamazoo is the only team in the UHL that hasn't given up a shorthanded goal.
