Week 6 Game Results:
11/23/05 Elmira 2 @ Roanoke 3 - Shootout
Roanoke VA - The Elmira Jackals earned a point with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Roanoke Valley Vipers Wednesday night at the Roanoke Civic Center.
After being out-scored a combined 11-to-1 in their previous two visits to Roanoke, the Jackals struck first. Carl Drakensjo snapped a quick wrist-shot past goaltender Jamie Hodson at 18:21 of the first period, assisted by Craig MacDonald and John Jarram for a 1-0 lead.
In the second period MacDonald made continued his recent good form with an unassisted, short-handed goal at 8:42 for a 2-0 lead; the goal was Elmira's 5th short handed goal of the year. Roanoke would strike back at 13:53 with a blast from Branislav Kvetan off a face-off to make it 2-1. The Vipers tied the game with 64 seconds remaining in the period on a Steve Crusco goal at 18:56.
After a scoreless third period where both teams had excellent scoring opportunities, although Roanoke out-shot the Jackals 10-to-6 in the final period.
In the shootout, Jarrett Konkle and Sean Regan each scored for Elmira, while L.P. Martin and David Beauregard found the net for Roanoke. After 5 rounds it was tied 2-2, so it went to sudden death. In round 6, after Kevin Cooper was denied by Hodson, Jan Jas beat Nick Boucher to earn the bonus point for the Vipers.
Hodson stopped 16-of-18 in the win for Roanoke, while Boucher made 31 saves on 33 shots for Elmira. Roanoke was 0-for-6 on the power play and out-shot the Jackals 34-to-18 in the game. Elmira was 0-for-2 on the power play.
11/25/05 Roanoke 6 @ Elmira 5 - Shootout
Elmira, NY - For the second straight game the Elmira Jackals skated to a shootout loss to the Roanoke Valley Vipers; this time it was 6-5 Friday night at the First Arena.
Roanoke took the first lead halfway through the first period when Mark Scott scored a power play goal at 11:15. Elmira countered at 14:22 when Tom Clayton tipped home a Chris Chaput shot for his first goal of the season. The power play goal was assisted by Chaput and Mike Dombkiewicz and tied the game at one. Rico Fatticci regained the Vipers lead at 16:44 to make it 2-1 after twenty minutes.
In the second period David Beauregard extend Roanoke's lead to 3-1 with a goal at 4:20, but it would not hold for long as the Jackals would score three times in under three minutes. 51 seconds later Kevin Cooper scored a power play goal at 5:11 from Dombkiewicz and Trevor Burgess, Elmira's second power play goal of the night. Just over a minute after Cooper's goal, line mate Jarrett Konkle tied the game at three with another power play goal at 6:43, assisted by Cooper and Chaput. Elmira would then take their first lead of the night at 8:08, when Tom Clayton scored his second goal of the night, the Jackals only even strength tally of the game, assisted by Burgess and Chaput for a 4-3 lead. But as usual, Roanoke did not give up. Beauregard scored his second goal of the game at 11:31 to tied the game at four, assisted by Jan Jas and L.P. Martin. Becoming the third player to score two goals in the game, Cooper would poke him another power play goal at 18:55 from Dombkiewicz and Konkle to make it 5-4 Jackals after forty minutes.
In the third period, the Vipers' L.P. Martin tied the game at 8:30 from Travis Smith and David Shillington, forcing this game into a nail biting final ten minutes. After some great chances from both sides to claim a victory, the game was sent to a shootout, Elmira's third consecutive shootout and fourth in their last five games. In the shootout, L.P. Martin and Josh Tataryn scored in rounds 1 and 5, while the Jackals had goals from Jarrett Konkle in the first round and Craig MacDonald in round four. But in round six Steve Crusco would beat Nick Boucher to earn Roanoke's second straight shootout victory over the Jackals.
Jamie Hodson got the win, stopping 28-of-33 shots and 4-of-6 in the shootout, while Nick Boucher got the shootout loss while making 23 saves on 28 shots and going 3-for-6 in the shootout. The Jackals out-shot the Vipers 33-to-29 in the game and was 4-for-9 on the power play. Roanoke was 2-for-10 with the man advantage.
11/26/05 Port Huron 2 @ Elmira 1
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals were halted by recently acquired Blake Stewart and the Port Huron Flags 2-1 Saturday night at the First Arena
Playing for the only time this season in Elmira, Port Huron took the lead at 12:04 of the first period. Defenseman Jeff Cameron scored from Brett Lutes and Aaron Brand to make it 1-0 Flags.
Elmira out-shot the Flags in the second period 13-to-10 and would equalize with a power play goal at 13:37 when Jarrett Konkle knocked home his tenth goal of the season assisted by Florian Iberer and Chris Chaput.
In the third period, Blake Stewart, who was acquired in a trade with Adirondack this afternoon, scored the game winning goal at 8:51. The goal was a power play goal assisted by Aaron Brand and Trevor Edwards. Elmira out-shot Port Huron 35-29 in the game.
Goaltender Scott Hay earned the win, making 34 saves on 35 shots for the Flags. Jackals goalie Ryan McIntosh made his first start since injuring his right knee, looking very sharp and making 27 saves on 29 shots in the loss.
11/27/05 Elmira 4 @ Adirondack 5
Glens Falls, NY - The Elmira Jackals came back from a two-goal deficit Sunday afternoon at the Glens Falls Civic Center, but lost 5-4 on a late power play goal by the Adirondack Frostbite.
After a scoreless first period, Elmira took the lead just 18 seconds into the second period when Kevin Cooper scored on a one-timer from Justin Laverdiere and Chris Chaput. But Adirondack came storming back three minutes later with two goals in under a minute. Hugo Belanger scored at 3:28 to tie the game and then the Frostbite took the lead on a power play goal from Sylvain Cloutier at 4:19.
Ryan Bennett extended the hosts lead to two at 1:13 of the third period, but Elmira would not go quietly into the night. Cooper scored his second goal of the game, a power play goal at 4:17, assisted by Trevor Burgess and John Donnelly. Adirondack newcomer Mart Hurtibise scored an unassisted goal at 6:45 to make the score 4-2. But this time Elmira would fight back to level ground. Justin Laverdiere scored his first professional goal at 10:06, from Sean Regan and Carl Drakensjo. Then leading scorer Jarrett Konkle tied the game at four with his 12th goal of the season at 13:07 assisted by Cooper. But with 10 seconds left on an Eddy Lowe penalty, Blue Bennefield scored Adirondack's second power play goal of the game to lift the Frostbite to a 5-4 victory.
Derek Gustafson took the win, stopping 26-of-30 in the game, while Nick Boucher took the loss, making 36 saves on 41 shots.
JACKALS PLAYER AND GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK: (WEEK 6)
Jarrett Konkle - LW 4 GP, 4 goals, 1 assists, 5 pts, -1, 8 PIMs
Jarrett Konkle suffered his first dry spell of the season two weeks ago. But the rookie showed veteran poise in working himself out of the mini slump. Konkle scored 4 goals and 1 assist this week, extending his team-leading point total to 18 (12 goals, 6 assists). His best night was Friday against Roanoke where he scored two power play goals in the span of 1:32 to bring Elmira back from a 3-1 deficit. Konkle was also a perfect 2-for-2 in the Jackals two shootouts during the week.
Ryan McIntosh - G 1 GP, 0-1-0, 2.03 GAA, 0.931 SV%, 27 saves
Ryan McIntosh has been battling a right knee injury the past two weeks which has kept him out of the lineup. He returned Saturday after missing the previous 5-games and almost earned his 3rd win of the season, making 27 saves on 29 shots in a narrow 2-1 loss to Port Huron. He finishes the week with a 2.03 GAA and a 0.931 save percentage. He leads the Jackals so far this season with a 3.33 GAA and a 0.902 save percentage.
JACKALS PLAYER AND GOALTENDER OF THE Month: (November)
Chris Chaput - C 15 GP, 3 goals, 10 assists, 13 pts, -8, 12 PIMs
Rookie Chris Chaput quietly and steadily worked his way through a grueling schedule in November. Elmira had 15 games in 26 days during the month and not only did Chaput play in all of them, he led the team in scoring during that period. Chaput had 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists), 12 penalty minutes and was a -8 while logging steady time on the power play and the penalty kill. The Pawtucket, Rhode Island native has 16 points in 19 games for Elmira this season, good for second on the Jackals.
Ryan McIntosh - G 6 GP, 1-4-0, 3.58 GAA, 0.891 SV%, 155 saves
Goaltender Ryan McIntosh was a solid force in the net for Elmira while he was healthy. The Calgary, Alberta native missed 5 straight games with a knee injury after appearing in 5 of the team's first 8 games in November. He led the team with a 3.58 GAA, while stopping 155-of-174 shots sent his way. He was 1-4-0 in 5 starts and one relief appearance and posted a .900 save percentage or higher in 4 of his 6 appearances.
JACKALS Rookie OF THE Month: (November)
Chris Chaput - C 15 GP, 3 goals, 10 assists, 13 pts, -8, 12 PIMs
Chris Chaput led the Jackals in scoring during the month of November. He also moved himself up to second on the team in scoring with 16 points overall, just 2 points behind fellow-rookie Jarrett Konkle. Chaput has also centered a power play unit of Konkle and Kevin Cooper that has become Elmira's top line on special teams over the last few weeks.
JACKAL BITES:
- HE'LL SAVE THAT PUCK - Rookie F Justin Laverdiere scored his first professional goal Sunday in a 5-4 loss at Adirondack. Laverdiere also had an assist in the game. He has played in 9 total games for the Jackals, but Laverdiere collected all of his 3 points this season over the past weekend.
- QUICK STRIKER - LW Jarrett Konkle scored two power-play goals in the span of one minute, thirty two seconds Friday against Roanoke, pulling Elmira level from a 3-1 deficit. Konkle is second on the team in power play goals with 5 this season.
- MINOR OFFENSES - The Jackals as a team are still leading the UHL in minor penalties (184). The Jackals are tied with Kalamazoo for the most minors received in one game this season. Elmira had 17 minor penalties on Wednesday November 9th at Roanoke Valley. The team is 3rd overall in the League in total penalty minutes (563), but are 8th in the UHL in minutes averaged per game (29.6 minutes). D Chris Mann is tied for the individual lead with 24 minor penalties and captain D Trevor Burgess is two back with 24 minors.
- ONE STREAK ON - LW Jarrett Konkle is on a 3-game goal scoring streak Konkle has scored in each of his last three games, including two goals Friday night against Roanoke, he has 4 goals over the weekend and a team leading 12 goals.
- ONE STREAK OFF - C Eddie Lowe just ended a 10-game streak of his own. C Eddie Lowe had a 10-game penalty minute streak snapped on Saturday against Port Huron. Beginning on November 6th, Lowe had been in the sin bin for 10 consecutive games, racking up 26 minutes during that stretch.
