Vipers Week in Review

November 28, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

LAST WEEK'S GAMES: The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), played two home-and-home sets with the Elmira Jackals and the Richmond RiverDogs last week, beginning at home on Wednesday against Elmira and ending at home on Sunday with a match against the RiverDogs. The Vipers sent all four of the games to shootouts and came out with two wins and two shootout losses. Rookie L.P. Martin scored five points during the week, not including three shootout goals to help the Vipers earn the six points they notched in the division standings. The Vipers now rest at third place in the UHL Eastern Division, just one point behind the Danbury Trashers, with a 7-6-3 record and 17 points.

Wednesday, November 23rd vs. Elmira

Roanoke Valley Vipers 3, Elmira Jackals 2, SO

Branislav Kvetan and Steve Crusco came through for the Vipers, each scoring a goal in the second period of play to clear the slate for Roanoke after they found themselves down 2-0 to the Jackals. Both teams were silent offensively in the third period, thus forcing a shootout. Vipers rookie and Sher-Wood UHL Player of the Week nominee L.P. Martin and team captain David Beauregard were successful during the first five rounds of shooters, but they were matched by goals off the sticks of Elmira's Jarrett Konkle and Sean Regan. It was Vipers centerman Jan Jas who would come through for the Vipers in round six to bring home the win after netminder Jamie Hodson stopped a shot from Kevin Cooper. Hodson made 16 regulation saves for the win.

Friday, November 25th at Elmira

Roanoke Valley Vipers 6, Elmira Jackals 5, SO

The Vipers battled back and forth for the lead with the Jackals Friday night, as D-man Rico Fatticci netted his first of the season. Mark Scott added a goal, and David Beauregard put in two of his own. It would be L.P. Martin who would force the shootout with a goal at the 8:30 mark of the third period after the Vipers had surrendered the lead to Elmira as Kevin Cooper scored a goal with 1:05 remaining in the second period. Martin was successful at his turn in the shootout, as was Josh Tataryn. Steve Crusco netted the winner in round six for the Vipers after the first round of five shooters kept the game locked in a tie. Jamie Hodson earned his second win in a row, making 28 regulation saves, and four stops in the shootout.

Saturday, November 26th at Richmond

Richmond RiverDogs 5, Roanoke Valley Vipers4, SO

After the RiverDogs scored the lone first period goal, the Vipers jumped ahead early in the second with goals from Alex Jerofejevs and David Beauregard, both coming within the first three minutes and 32 seconds of the period. The RiverDogs would gain the lead once again, scoring three consecutive goals within the last eight minutes of the period, as the Vipers headed to the locker room down by two. The Vipers, who have been known for their third period offensive bursts, would not go down without a fight, as defenseman/forward Matt Kenny scored 29 seconds into the final period, followed by Mark Scott just three and a half minutes after, ultimately tying the game at four apiece. Neither team would score for the remaining 16:01 of regulation play, and with six tenths of a second remaining on the clock, the Vipers found themselves at a faceoff in front of the RiverDogs net, likely heading to their third straight shootout. Richmond had other plans for the meantime, however, as they mauled the Vipers with the drop of the puck, causing pandemonium on the ice as the travel-weary Vipers attempted to avoid the skirmish and move onto the shootout. The Vipers got out of it without penalty, aside from a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a 10-minute misconduct, both handed to leading goal-scorer and team captain Beauregard. The RiverDogs suffered twelve minutes of penalties plus two game misconducts for their actions, but the damage had been done as Beauregard was deemed ineligible to participate in the shootout. Almost appropriately, the shootout lasted 13 rounds as the advantage went back and forth between the teams. Mike Oliveira scored in round one for the RiverDogs, and Vipers shootout specialist Josh Tataryn knotted it up in round four with a shot past Mike D'Alessandro. In round eight, both teams were successful, as Mark Scott scored for the Vipers and Brian Goudie quickly responded with a goal for the ‘Dogs. In round 11, teams became eligible to reuse shooters, as both did, sending Tataryn and Oliveira, who both scored for a second time for their teams. In round 13 after an unsuccessful shot attempt by the Vipers, J.J. Wrobel beat Shawn Conschafter as the match finally ended and the RiverDogs skated off with two points.

Sunday, November 27 vs. Richmond

Richmond RiverDogs 3, Roanoke Valley Vipers 2, SO

The Vipers returned home Sunday, anxious to avenge their Saturday night loss to their cross-state rival RiverDogs. They jumped ahead early with goals from rookie forwards Mike Krelove, who netted his first of the season and first as a professional, and Matt Miller. Richmond bounced back in the third, scoring two goals at 9:58 and 11:17 of the period, again forcing a shootout, making that the Vipers' fourth in five nights. The fatigued and battered Vipers scored a round one goal off the stick of L.P. Martin, but the RiverDogs scored in the second and third rounds, and Roanoke was never able to recover, as they settled for a one-point shootout loss.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers head out of town to face two more division rivals on Friday and Saturday, December 2nd and 3rd, as they travel to Danbury, CT and then move onto Glens Falls, NY. The Vipers are 1-1-0 on the season versus the Trashers, and have yet to play them at home at the Roanoke Civic Center. Roanoke has also faced the Frostbite twice on the year, and has a 0-1-1 record against Adirondack. They will look for their first win on the season against the leaders of the Eastern Division on Saturday night.
