Kalamazoo, MI. - Four point nights for Toledo's AJ Jenks and Shane Berschbach helped the Walleye on Friday night as they topped Kalamazoo 5-2 at Wings Event Center.
Kalamazoo scored on the man-advantage for the second straight game, finishing 1-for-6 in the defeat, while holding the Walleye scoreless on four attempts. Defenseman Aleksandr Mikulovich netted his first goal as a K-Wing, while Eric Kattelus added an assist in his season debut.
It didn't take much time for Toledo to get on the board in the first as Trevor Hamilton gave the visitors the lead just over a minute into regulation. Hamilton's shot from the point snuck past Jake Hildebrand. Toledo's lead would grow to 2-0 about four and a half minutes later. Kevin Tansey doubled the lead with a wrist shot from the point that squeaked through Jake Hildebrand's five-hole. Four minutes later the K-Wings cut the lead to one. Eric Kattelus controlled the puck off an offensive zone face-off, turning back and feeding Aleksandr Mikulovich with a quick pass. The defenseman's slap shot beat Kaden Fulcher high, bringing Kalamazoo within one. Toledo regained the two-goal lead by the end of the opening period, with 1:31 to play in the period. Tyler Spezia's snap-shot rolled over the shoulder of Jake Hildebrand and into the cage, pushing the lead back to two goals.
In the middle frame the Walleye were the only team to get on the board as Spezia and Matt Register netted goals five minutes apart, giving the Walleye their largest lead of the night at 5-1. In the final period Kalamazoo got back on the board when Jagger Dirk netted a power play tally 9:36 into the final frame, but three goals was the closest that Kalamazoo would come. Toledo ended the night topping the K-Wings 5-2.
Jake Hildebrand surrendered five goals on 19 shots, while Keegan Asmundson stopped all 17 he faced in relief. Kaden Fulcher, making his second straight start against Kalamazoo, stopped 31 of 33 shots in the victory.
Kalamazoo is back in action tomorrow night as they host the Beast on Military Appreciation Night. The K-Wings specialty jerseys will be auctioned off after the game, with proceeds going to Talons Out.
