Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Cincinnati, OH- A streak had to end Wednesday night at the U.S. Bank Arena and fortunately for the Kalamazoo Wings it was their three-game winless streak (0-2-0-1), as the K-Wings ended the skid with a 4-3 victory over the defending Kelly Cup champions, Cincinnati Cyclones. The loss pushed the Cyclones winless streak to six games (0-4-1-1).
Entering the U.S. Bank Arena just one for their last 18 on the power-play, the K-Wings found lighting in a bottle striking for two man-advantage goals in the first period.
Brandon Svendsen (3rd) extended his point streak to six games with a left circle blast 5:11 into the game. Four minutes later, A.J. Thelen earned his first goal as a K-Wing with a wrister from the blue line.
Trying to stop a breakaway midway in the period, Thelen hooked Matt Pierce in the K-Wings zone to setup a penalty shot. Pierce connected on the ensuing penalty shot, placing the puck beneath the block of Ryan Nie for this second goal of the season, to bring the Cyclones back to within a single goal.
Svendsen (4th) continued his dominance in the second period, stealing a breakout pass deep in the Cyclones zone and quickly snipping the puck past Chet Pickard to push the K-Wings lead back to two goals. The goal was Svendsen's second of the night and his third point overall, as the forward earned the lone assist on Thelen's tally in the first.
Kalamazoo pushed their lead to three-goals 6:58 into the third period, with the third lamp-lighter of the night for Svendsen, which was his first professional hat trick.
Cincinnati tried to mount a comeback with power-play goals from Christiaan Minella (1st) and Scott Lehman (2nd), but it wouldn't be enough, as the K-Wings earn their third win of the season against the defending Kelly Cup champions.
