Salmon Kings' Gill Earns ECHL Goaltender of the Month Award
November 3, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that goaltender Riley Gill has been named the ECHL Goaltender of the Month for October.
The 24-year old netminder finished the month of October with a 3-0-0 record, which included a league-leading goals against average of 1.33 and save percentage of 0.955. He also earned one shutout in his Salmon Kings' debut on October 16th in Idaho where he turned aside all 39 shots he faced. Gill followed up his shutout performance with a 25-save performance in a 3-1 victory in Las Vegas on October 22nd, and a 21-save, 6-3 win at home versus the Ontario Reign on October 29th.
The Northfield, MN native becomes only the second Salmon Kings' goaltender to win the league's monthly award, following Todd Ford who took home the honors in December 2008.
The 6-2, 200 lb rookie goaltender began his professional career last year with the Kalamazoo Wings, where he appeared in three games and posted a 1-0-1 record to match a 0.929 save percentage and 2.48 goals against average. Gill also was given the nod for three starts with the K-Wings during the 2010 Kelly Cup Playoffs, where he accumulated a 1-2 mark with a 2.26 goals against average and 0.941 save percentage.
Gill spent four years (2006-07 through 2009-10) with the NCAA's Western Michigan University Broncos prior to turning professional. In 111 career starts at school, Gill finished with a 39-56-12 record, alongside a 0.915 save percentage, a 2.95 goals against average and eight shutouts. His shutout and save percentage totals stand as school records, while his 2.95 goals against average ranks second all-time at WMU.
The Salmon Kings welcome the Idaho Steelheads into Victoria for a three-game series tonight, Friday, November 5th and Saturday, November 6th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. This Saturday's contest is "Canadian Armed Forces" night where the Salmon Kings will celebrate the men and women of uniform as well as the Navy Centennial. The team will be wearing commemorative Navy centennial jerseys, while great Military displays and exhibits will be on-site! For tickets call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
