Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
(SUGAR LAND, TX) - Jose Siri hit a grand slam and a three-run double through his first two at-bats Thursday night to lead the Sugar Land Skeeters to a 10-4 victory against the Round Rock Express.
The 7-RBI effort from Siri set a Skeeters (6-1) franchise record, also including the organizations nine-year run as an independent franchise. The win broke a tie with Round Rock and put the Skeeters alone atop first place in Triple A West for the first time this season.
Siri cleared the bases in the first inning with his double that one-hopped the right-field wall at Dell Diamond before hitting the first grand slam in Skeeters Triple A history an inning later. Siri leads all Triple A players with 18 RBIs this season.
The Skeeters recorded a double-digit hit total for the sixth time in seven games this season. They entered Thursday with the highest batting average of Triple A teams.
In between Siri's three-run double and grand slam, Jake Meyers deposited a two-run home run to left field, giving him a team-high four homers this season. Three of Meyers' home runs have come over the Skeeters' last two games. Garrett Stubbs added the final RBI of the night with a single to bring in CJ Hinojosa in the ninth.
Thursday marked the first of 30 meetings between Round Rock and Sugar Land in 2021 and was the first time the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers Triple A affiliates met with both teams located in Texas.
Austin Hansen got the start for the Skeeters and allowed a run on two hits through 1 2/3 innings before handing over to the bullpen. Seth Martinez picked up his second win of the year, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief with four strikeouts directly following Hansen. Martinez has thrown 4 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out nine to open the season.
Round Rock (5-2) scored three of its runs in the sixth inning, aided by a two-run home run from Elier Hernandez.
Right-hander Brett Conine will make his second start of the season at 7:05 p.m. on Friday at Dell Diamond. Round Rock has yet to name a starter.
