Wheeling Nailers News Release

Wheeling, WV ¨C It was a magical night at WesBanco Arena as a Jordan Fox shot from the right-wing wall deflected off a Kalamazoo defenseman and bounced past goalie Riley Gill with just 1 second remaining in overtime in one of the most dramatic victories in Wheeling Nailers history. Fox¡¯s 19th goal of the year in the spine-tingling finish gave the Nailers a 4-3 triumph and sent the WesBanco Arena crowd into a frenzy on the thrilling win.

The crowd was already aware of Toledo¡¯s 7-4 loss at Johnstown earlier on the night and understood that the Wheeling win pulled the Nailers to within 2 points of Toledo for the 8th and last playoff spot in the conference.

Andrew Lord (15), Jon D¡¯Aversa (5) and Dan Henningson (3) also lit the lamp in the heart-stopping victory.

The win improves Wheeling¡¯s record to 32-31-6. Wheeling travels to Toledo for their last road game of the regular season on Saturday night for a big matchup against the Walleye and a chance to move into an 8th place tie. Wheeling would win a tie-breaker over Toledo to advance to the playoff should the standings conclude that way.

After the Saturday game, Toledo concludes the season with 3 games against Kalamazoo and one against Johnstown. So the Nailers will be cheering for the Wings for much of the rest of the regular season. But before the Nailers can do any scoreboard watching is the Saturday game at the Walleye which is a must-win game for the Nailers.

Halfway through the first, a 2 on 1 developed for the Wings. Patrick Asselin centered the puck for Mathieu Curadeau, who banked it off Berkhoel to give the Wings a 1-0 lead.

Later in the first frame, the Nailers had the puck pinned in the Kalamazoo zone. Kevin Schmidt picked up the puck and hit captain Andrew Lord with a nice centering pass from the right circle and Lord chipped it home to tie the game 1-1. It was Lord¡¯s 15th goal of the season.

The 2nd period saw the scoreboard light up two more times with each team tallying a power play power play goal.

After a Cleve Kinley hooking minor the K-Wings were on the attack. Sam Ftorek gathered the puck and took a big slap shot that got past a screened Berkhoel to give the Wings a 2-1 lead.

Later in the period, the Nailers had a power play opportunity of their own. After controlling the puck in the Kalamazoo zone, Jon D¡¯Aversa received a pass from Jordan Morrison and blasted the one-timer in from just inside the blue line. Riley Gill got a glove on the puck but couldn¡¯t stop it completely as it went in behind him for D¡¯Aversa¡¯s 5th goal of the season. It was the second game in a row in which D¡¯Aversa tied the game at 2-2 with a power play goal late in the 2nd period.

2:42 into the 3rd, Dan Henningson snatched a rebound of a Kevin Schmidt slapper from behind the net, carried it around to the front and scored. It was Henningson¡¯s 3rd goal of the season and gave the Nailers their only lead of the night, 3-2. The play started with a terrific forecheck and steal by Jordan Fox to set up the first lead of the night for the Nailers.

Less than five minutes later Sam Ftorek tied up the game when he cashed in on a rebound opportunity of his own shot giving him two goals on the evening and tying the game at 3-3.

Overtime ended on Jordan Fox¡¯s last second goal.

Following Saturday night¡¯s contest at Toledo, the Nailers wrap up the regular season with back to back games against Reading on Friday April 2nd, and Cincinnati on April 3rd at WesBanco Arena.

Friday, April 2nd is Nailers Baby Blue Ball-Cap Giveaway for the first 2500 fans courtesy of Main Street Bank. Saturday April 3rd is Fan Appreciation Night and Ticket Extravaganza Night. ¡¡
