Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Boise, ID - In a Friday night contest, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads met in the second of a three-game set at the Qwest Arena in Boise, ID. The Salmon Kings gave the nod to Glenn Fisher in net, while the Steelheads started Richard Bachman.
Neither team could open the scoring in the first period as both Fisher and Bachman were perfect with four and nine saves, respectively. The best chance for each team in the period came on a breakaway, but both Chad Painchaud and Mark Derlago were denied in their efforts. The Salmon Kings nearly netted the first goal in the final seconds of the frame, but a shot that beat Bachman rang off the post behind him. Both clubs skated into the opening intermission remaining in a scoreless tie.
The Salmon Kings scored the opening goal of the game and lone marker of the second period at the 9:26 mark. On a three-on-two offensive rush Eric Walsky skated the puck into the right faceoff circle and snapped a shot that beat Bachman over his left shoulder into the net. Walsky's goal was his first as a member of the Salmon Kings. Fisher made 12 second-period saves to ensure the visitors took their 1-0 edge into the third period.
The third period was also dominated by the goaltenders as Bachman stopped all nine Victoria shots, while Fisher turned aside 14 Idaho offerings including a shorthanded breakaway off the stick of Victoria, BC native Geoff Irwin. The home side pulled their goaltender in the final minute of the game, but could not net the equalizer past the Salmon Kings' goaltender. Salmon Kings 1 Steelheads 0.
Victoria went 0/6=0.0% on the power play while Idaho finished 0/4=0.0%. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 30-29.
The Salmon Kings and Steelheads finish their three-game set tomorrow evening at the Qwest Arena with puck drop at 6:05 p.m. Victoria returns home to host the Utah Grizzlies on Wednesday, March 31st, Friday, April 2nd, and Saturday, April 3rd. Puck drop for all three games is at 7:05 p.m at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Next Saturday's home contest versus the Grizzlies is "Sellout Saturday". Tickets are now available for just $5 each!
