Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals will have to wait one more day for another chance to clinch a spot in the 2010 Kelly Cup Playoffs, as the Trenton Devils came from behind to defeat the Jackals, 3-2, in overtime at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y. on Friday night. The overtime loss was the second in as many games for the Jackals, and for the second consecutive game the Jackals fell one goal shy of a playoff berth.

Tyler Donati started the scoring for the Jackals with a one-timer from the right circle that found the upper-right corner of the net to give the Jackals the advantage. Justin Donati had an assist on the play for his 94th point of the season, putting him alone in second all-time on the Jackals single-season scoring leaderboard. R.J. Anderson had the second assist on the goal at 13:35 of the second period.

Trevor Kell brought the Devils back minutes later with a wrist shot from the left circle that beat Jackals goaltender Andy Chiodo stick side to tie the game 1-1 at 16:30 of the middle frame.

The Jackals retook the lead at the 17:19 mark of the second period when Justin Donati's slap shot on the power play banked in off of Trenton's Jeff Prough to give the Jackals a 2-1 advantage. R.J. Anderson registered the 40th point of his rookie season on the play.

Prough's finding of the net ended up being a preview of things to come, as his wrist shot at 9:32 of the third period beat Chiodo glove side to tie the game.

In overtime, Prough found Tony Zancanaro on the doorstep, and Zancanaro lifted the puck over Chiodo to give the Devils an overtime victory at 2:40 of the extra session.

The Jackals now need to earn one point or have the Gwinnett Gladiators lose one point to earn a spot in the postseason. Elmira's division lead fell to four points as the Reading Royals beat the South Carolina Stingrays, 4-2, on Friday.

Chiodo stopped 35 of 38 shots in the overtime loss, with his record dropping to 8-4-3-0. Caruso improved to 18-20-1-1, including 6-2-0-0 against the Jackals, with a 22-save effort.

The Jackals' record fell to 35-23-6-3 while the Devils' upped their record to 30-29-3-4 and are now three points behind Toledo for the eighth and final playoff spot.

The Jackals take on the Devils at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, N.J. at 7:00 p.m on Saturday.
