Atlanta Gladiators News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - Gwinnett goaltender Jeff Jakaitis picked up his second shutout of the season, as the Gladiators stymied the South Carolina Stingrays 1-0 Saturday night at North Charleston Coliseum. The Glads (13-8-5-3) now push their South Division lead to five points over the Rays (14-11-0-1).

Jakaitis turned aside all 23 shots faced for his third win in-a-row in his fourth straight start. Daren Machesney made 21 saves to keep the Stingrays in it, but the Glads made their lone marker on the night count.

Gwinnett got the offense going early in the second, as Will Colbert blasted a slapper from the point past a screened Machesney just 36 seconds in. Forwards Igor Gongalsky and Nikita Kashirsky added the assists on Colbert's second tally of the season and Gwinnett held the 1-0 edge through two periods.

South Carolina upped the pressure in the third, but the Gwinnett defense and Jakaitis stood tall, including during a late two minute 5-on-3 for the Stingrays. After totaling just 11 shots through the first two periods the Rays had 12 in the third, but Gwinnett held on for the 1-0 win.

These two teams meet again Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at North Charleston Coliseum.

Cheverie Recalled to Portland

Gladiators goaltender and Coyotes prospect Marc Cheverie was recalled to AHL Portland prior to Saturday night's game in South Carolina. In 12 games with the Glads so far this season Cheverie is 3-2-5-2 with a 2.99 goals against average and a .902 save percentage.

Cheverie was acquired by the Coyotes on September 9th from the Florida Panthers in exchange for center Justin Bernhardt. The second year pro split time last season with the Cincinnati Cyclones and the Rochester Americans of the AHL. He recorded a 13-9-7 record and a 3.11 goals against average with the Cyclones and had a 2-7-1 record and an .886 save percentage with the Americans.

The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native played three seasons at the University of Denver from 2007-2010 before he began his professional career. In three seasons at Denver, Cheverie notched a 48-18-13 record and a .926 save percentage in 80 career collegiate games. The Gladiators are the ECHL Affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres and the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
