TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: The Cyclones will wrap up another week of hockey tonight as they look to salvage two points from the Chicago Express at U.S. Bank Arena while, in the process, climb up the North Division ladder. The Clones are still in search of their first-ever victory against the Express, as they have gone 0-2-0-2 in their first four meetings this season.
TONIGHT'S PROMOTION: Twister SnowGlobe Night - The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a Twister SnowGlobe courtesy of Beacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine!
SCOUTING THE EXPRESS: Steve Martinson's club picked up a 5-3 win over Elmira last night and remains four points back of first-place Kalamazoo in the North Division. They've earned points in seven of their last ten games and sport the fourth-strongest offense in the Eastern Conference with 80 goals-scored. Also not surprisingly of a Martinson-coached team, the Express are a leader in penalty minutes, being whistled for a conference-high 469 of them. Chad Painchaud, who was traded to Chicago from Reading earlier this month, is now the Express' offensive leader with 22 points (7 goals, 15 assists). Tyler Donati is a close second with 21 points (4 goals, 17 assists) in 18 games. His assist totals are good for a sixth-place tie in the ECHL. Allen York, who has seen time in the NHL this season with Columbus, has shouldered the load between the pipes of late for the Express. In six appearances this season, York has earned a 4-1-1 record with a 2.97 goals-against average.
About Last Night in Kalamazoo: The Wings tallied six unanswered goals as they erased a two-goal deficit and went on to defeat the Cyclones by a 7-3 final in front of 2,686 at Wings Stadium. Maury Edwards, David Leaderer and Mike Pelech each scored goals for Cincinnati. Pelech, Edwards, and Justin Vaive, all notched multi point games.
Multi-Point Magic: While all but two Cyclones have registered at least a point this season, a good chunk of the roster have collected multi-point games. In fact, 13 different Cincy players have had such a game. Mathieu Aubin leads the team with five, Anthony Luciani and Mike Pelech have four, while Daniel Koger have three. Last night in Kalamazoo, Pelech, Maury Edwards, and Justin Vaive all had multi-point games.
Pelech the Point Machine: Cincy forward Mike Pelech has been a force to be reckoned with since joining the Clones. He has 12 points (2 goals, 10 assists) in his first eight games with Cincinnati and has registered at least a point in all but one of them. He registered his second multipoint game of the season last night in Kalamazoo.
Early Bird Catches the "W": Scoring first in games will traditionally give teams an upper hand. That is certainly the case with Cincinnati, which is now 6-4-0-1 when striking first and are an impressive 4-1-0-1 when scoring the games first two goals.
On the Contrary...: While scoring early helps, the Cyclones have found the most offense late in games, scoring 22 of their 61 goals in the final frame. In fact, 16 of those 22 goals have come in the final 10 minutes of regulation play.
