Jackals Squeak Past the Cyclones, 5-4

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Anthony Luciani scored twice in a back-and-forth affair, but the Cyclones (23-10-1-1) were unable to rally and fell to the Elmira Jackals (11-19-2-2) by a 5-4 margin in front of 1,184 at U.S. Bank Arena on Thursday night. Five different Jackals lit the lamp in the contest and netminder Maxime Clermont (W, 25 saves, 5-9-0-1), who stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced in the tilt, played well enough to snap the team's three-game losing streak. With their tallies, Anthony Luciani and Paul Crowder extended their point-scoring streaks to five consecutive games in the loss.

The Cyclones were tested early when Danny Hobbs found his way past Michael Houser (L, 18 saves, 5-6-0-1) at 1:14. The home team responded quickly, however, when Luciani, hot off his four-point performance last night, blasted an unassisted slap shot from just inside the blue line past Clermont at 6:49. Less than two minutes later, the Jackals regained the lead when Maxim Lamarche fired his third tally of the season just under the crossbar at 8:51. Although each team recorded eight shots on goal in the frame, the Cyclones entered the first intermission trailing by one.

Momentum briefly shifted in favor of the home team, however, when Dane Walters was called for hooking. On the ensuing power play, Paul Crowder poked a rebound past Clermont at 9:24, giving him his eleventh tally of the season and knotting the score at two. The Jackals broke the stalemate at 12:06 when Rob Bellamy found the back of the net, but the Cyclones weren't done scoring. Phil Bushbacher recorded the equalizer when he notched his first goal as a Cyclone at 18:20.

The scoring frenzy continued early in the final frame when Jackals captain Jean Bourbeau added a goal of his own at 1:18. The visitors padded their cushion when Ludwig Karlsson scored five-hole on Houser, giving his team a 5-3 lead. After the Cyclones pulled Houser, Luciani buried a rebound with 99 seconds remaining in regulation. Although the home team mounted a fast, furious, and frantic comeback attempt, they were unable to convert and the Jackals narrowly escaped with the victory.

"We've got to get those two points, but you've got to give [Elmira] credit," said Cyclones captain David MacDonald. "They outworked us at times and buried their chances. We fought back, but we shouldn't have put ourselves in that position in the first place," he added.
