Elmira Jackals News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY - With two crucial points hanging in the balance, the Elmira Jackals overcame a 3-0 deficit after the first period to power past the Adirondack Thunder, 6-4. Kyle Stroh opened the scoring for the Jackals and Cason Hohmann recorded two goals in the second period to tie the game heading into the third period. Darcy Murphy opened the final frame with a breakaway goal, followed by a quick strike from Chris Langkow and Jacob MacDonald capped off a six-goal run for the pack sealing the victory. Shane Owen made 32 saves to earn his ninth win in 11 games with the Jackals.
Ryan Lomberg started the scoring at 4:42 of the first period, capitalizing off of a turnover in the slot for his 18th goal of the season.
Later in the opening frame, the Thunder took advantage of a failed clearance as Greg Wolfe kept the puck in at the blue line and feathered a pass to Michael Kirkpatrick in the slot for his team-leading 27th goal of the season.
Kirkpatrick struck again late in the period with a quick wrist shot past Shane Owen for his second of the night and 28th of the campaign with the assists going to Ryan Lomberg and Mathieu Brodeur.
The Jackals bounced back and buried early in the second period to start a run of six unanswered goals. Just 1:33 into the frame, Ian Young fired a low shot from the right wing circle that kicked off Ken Appleby's pad and onto Kyle Stroh's stick in the slot for his 11th goal of the season.
Later in the period, Cason Hohmann pulled the Jackals within one as he pounced on a loose puck along the net and buried it for his 19th goal of the year at 14:03. Matt Garbowsky and Spiro Goulakos earned the assists.
Just over two minutes later, at 16:44, Hohmann scored again and knotted the game 3-3 with his second of the night and 20th goal of the campaign. Just as a Jackals power-play expired, Jacob MacDonald laid a puck towards the net that was whacked at by Chris Langkow and popped out to Hohmann for the tying tally.
The Jackals continued to build on their momentum early in the third period as Steven McParland blocked a point shot and sauced a pass ahead to Darcy Murphy, springing him on a breakaway for his second professional goal at 2:18. McParland has recorded an assist in each of his first two pro games.
Less than a minute later the pesky pack pounced on Appleby again. The line of Chris Langkow, Cason Hohmann and Chris Langkow went to work deep in the Thunder end and Hohmann threaded a pass into the slot for Langkow who labeled a wrist shot top shelf for his 13th goal of the season.
The scoring continued at 10:45 as Jacob MacDonald fired a shot through traffic off the post and past Appleby for his 17th goal of the season, extending his team single-season record for goals scored by a defenseman. Matt Garbowsky and Zach Cohen earned the assists on MacDonald's marker.
The Thunder desperately tried to stop the bleeding as Peter MacArthur scored on the power-play at 16:20 to cut the Jackals lead down to two. However, that was where the scored stopped and the Thunder comeback came to a halt.
With the win, the Jackals set a new team single-season record with their 21st road win.
Shane Owen turned aside 32 of 36 shots faced to improve his record to 9-1-1 with Elmira. Ken Appleby allowed six goals on 29 shots faced and was handed the loss.
