Isotopes Cruise Past Zephyrs 7-4

August 22, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Starting pitcher Tim Corcoran cruised into the seventh inning, helping the Albuquerque Isotopes (63-64) defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs (61-67) 7-4 Sunday night at Isotopes Park, the 'Topes' second straight win over the Z's to start the four-game series.

Corcoran did allow two runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Mike Lamb, but then sailed from second to sixth inning, allowing only three hits, and survived a fourth inning in which all three outs came by the way of fielders' choice, with runners at every base.

After scoring a run in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-1, the Isotopes took a 4-2 lead in the second with a three-run uprising. After Justin Sellers turned a single into a one-out double with some hustle on the base-paths, Corcoran poked a single up the middle, scoring the runner and knotting the game at 2-2. Two batters later, Ivan De Jesus Jr. then hit a two-out single and alertly hustled into second when the Z's threw to third in a vain attempt to get Corcoran, who was running on contact. With two runners in scoring position, Russ Mitchell crushed a double, clearing the bases and giving the 'Topes a 4-2 edge. De Jesus Jr. remains red-hot in the month of August. After a four hit night on Saturday, which included the game winning walk-off single to beat the Z's 6-5, the infielder had another three hits on Sunday.

Albuquerque expanded its lead in the fifth with another three runs. Mitchell started off the frame by reaching on a throwing error from third baseman Lamb. Following the miscue, John Lindsey walked and Michael Restovich singled. With the bases loaded, J.D. Closser lined a single to left that scored Mitchell and Lindsey, increasing the lead to 6-2 'Topes. A Sellers sac-fly scored Restovich from third for a 7-2 Albuquerque advantage.

New Orleans would touch Corcoran again in the seventh on a two-run homer by Chris Hatcher to make the score 7-4, but that's as close the visitors would get. The starter Corcoran (7-8) finished the game with 6.1 innings-pitched, allowing four earned runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking one en route to his career-high seventh win of the season and his second in a row.

Jon Link took over for Corcoran and shut down New Orleans for an inning and a third before handing the ball to closer Scott Dohmann (14), who capped off the Z's in the ninth with a flawless one-two-three inning to seal the 7-4 victory.

The Isotopes will go for their third straight win in as many games against the Zephyrs on Monday behind right-hander John Ely (4-3, 5.98), who will make the start for the 'Topes against Z's righty Tom Mastny (4-4, 4.41) in a 6;35 PM start from The Lab.

Albuquerque continues its monster homestand, featuring 14 games in 13 days, on Monday with Isotopes Tote Bags to the first 2,000 fans courtesy of United RV. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
