Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - It's not that often that a game is decided by hit-by-pitches. However, on Sunday the Memphis Redbirds took advantage of two batters hit by pitches with the bases loaded to clip the Omaha Royals 10-9. With the win, witnessed by 3,523 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium, Memphis moved back into a second place tie with Omaha in the PCL American North division. Both teams are now 3.5 games behind Iowa, as the Cubs shaded Nashville 3-2 in Des Moines.
The Royals trailed 6-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, but rallied with three runs in the fourth and five tallies in the fifth to take an 8-7 lead. But, in the top of the sixth, Omaha reliever Louis Coleman (4-2) gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out. He then hit Mark Hamilton with an 0-2 pitch to force in the tying run. Ruben Gotay lifted a sacrifice fly to center - the third sac fly of the game for Memphis - to give the Redbirds a 9-8 lead.
In the eighth, Memphis scored a needed insurance run when Josh Rupe hit Matt Pagnozzi with the bases loaded and one out to force in the Redbirds' final tally.
The Royals scored a run in the eighth off Josh Kinney. Mike Moustakas ripped a one-out double down the right field line for his fourth hit of the day. He took third on a fly out and then scored on Scott Thorman's infield hit. It was the third RBI of the game for Thorman, who earlier hit a two-run homer for his 19th round-tripper of the year. Kinney retired Lucas May on a fly to center to end the inning.
Memphis closer Fernando Salas pitched a 1-2-3 ninth as he stayed perfect in save chances, converting his 19th of the season. Nate Robertson (2-1) was credited with the win, despite yielding three runs on four hits in one inning of relief.
Omaha (71-58) lost for just the fourth time in the last 15 games. Memphis (71-58) has won nine of its last 13 and is now 8-6 in the season series with two meetings remaining. The Redbirds improved to 23-8 in one-run games.
Game three of the series is Monday at 7:05 p.m. Kansas City right-hander Brian Bannister will make his first rehab assignment start for Omaha, facing Redbirds righty P.J. Walters (7-4, 3.66).
