Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox shutout the Fresno Grizzlies 2-0 on Saturday night at Security Service Field in front of 5,813 fans to take game one of the four-game series. Three Sox pitchers combined to shutdown the Grizzlies offense with a three-hitter.
The shutout was the fifth of the season for the Sky Sox and the second at home as the Springs blanked the Las Vegas 51s in seven innings in game two of a doubleheader on April 18th. The last time the Sox had a nine-inning shutout at Security Service Field was on July 24, 2009 versus Sacramento when Springs pulverized the Rivercats 19-0.
Samuel Deduno (3-1) started for the Sox tonight and turned in an impressive performance. In just his second ever start in Colorado Springs, the righty tossed six innings and gave up just one hit, a double by Brett Pill in the sixth, walked four and struck out seven. He was followed by reliever Andrew Johnston in the seventh who need just five pitches to retire the side in order before Franklin Morales came on and complete a two-inning save, his first of the season, to finish off the contest.
At the plate, the Sox got all the offense they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Kaz Matsui greeted starter Henry Sosa (7-7) with a single and moved to third on a double by Cole Garner. Jay Payton lined out to second before Matt Miller lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Matsui and put the Sox up 1-0. For Miller, the sac fly was the 18th of his Sky Sox career which tied him with Luis Medina and Pedro Castellano for 4th on the Sox all-time list. In addition, the RBI was the 192nd of his Sox career and tied him with Harvey Pulliam for 8th on the all-time list.
The Sky Sox would add an insurance run in the seventh when a leadoff single, this time by Travis Metcalf, would be cashed in again. Alan Johnson pinch-hit for Deduno and sacrificed Metcalf to second to put him into scoring position. Payton came through two batters later with a clutch two-out RBI single to left to score Metcalf and seal the Sox victory at 2-0.
Game two tomorrow afternoon is set for 1:05 PM with RH Chaz Roe (7-12, 5.80) taking the mound for the Sox against RH Waldis Joaquin (1-2, 3.27) who will be making a spot start for Fresno.
