Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Lehigh Valley's Enyel De Los Santos showed Thursday why he's the Triple-A leader in ERA as he held Gwinnett to one run over 8.0 innings to sweep the Stripers in their three-game series at Coolray Field.

The IronPigs got De Los Santos all the run support he would need in the first inning against Stripers starter Max Fried. After getting the first out, Fried gave up a single to Collin Cowgill and a walk to Mitch Walding. Joey Meneses hit a double, scoring Cowgill and moving Walding to third; he would score a batter later on a Trevor Plouffe sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Fried allowed a one-out single to Matt McBride, who moved to second on a De Los Santos sacrifice bunt. Dean Anna singled to put runners at the corners, then Fried was called for a balk, sending McBride home.

Troubles continued for Fried over the next two innings, as he allowed a pair of two-out doubles to Plouffe and Nick Rickles in the third to make it 4-0. In the fourth, De Los Santos led off with a bunt single, then stole second. He moved to third on a Cowgill single. Fried attempted to pick Cowgill off but threw it away, moving him to third and scoring De Los Santos. Cowgill scored on a Walding sacrifice fly, then Meneses drilled a solo home run (10) one batter later.

Fried (L, 1-3) got through the fifth cleanly, but finished after 5.0 innings with nine hits, seven earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts on his line.

Meanwhile, De Los Santos mowed down the Stripers inning-after-inning, working quickly and getting early swings.

Gwinnett's lone run came in the fifth when Rio Ruiz led off with a towering homer (3) to dead center. Beyond that, the Stripers never had more than one runner reach base until the eighth inning, when Tyler Smith and pinch-hitter Xavier Avery both singled, but were left stranded.

De Los Santos was done after career high-tying 8.0 innings despite throwing 87 pitches, 64 for strikes. He gave up five hits and struck out seven, lowering his Triple-A-leading ERA from 1.70 to 1.63. Yacksel Rios tossed a perfect ninth.

David Peterson, Chad Bell and Josh Ravin combined to throw four scoreless innings while surrendering just two hits for the Stripers in relief.

Michael Reed singled in the fourth to keep his on-base streak alive at nine games, as many as he has played for the Stripers this season.

Cowgill finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Meneses was 2-for-5 with the homer and two RBIs, and McBride was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Stripers carry a six-game losing streak into a series against the Syracuse Chiefs beginning Friday at Coolray Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Kolby Allard (4-1, 2.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for Gwinnett, while the Chiefs will throw right-hander Erick Fedde (2-2, 4.91 ERA). Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 6:35 p.m.
