Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Center fielder Jacob May's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning led the Charlotte Knights to a 3-1 win over the Syracuse Chiefs on Thursday in the finale of a three-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. With the win, the Knights earned their fourth-consecutive series victory. The red-hot Knights have now won nine of their last 13 games.
RHP Donny Roach (6-2, 3.25) continued his impressive 2018 campaign. Roach allowed just one run (unearned) on four hits over seven masterful innings to earn his team-high sixth win of the season. He walked just one batter and struck-out two on the evening.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the seventh inning, May played the hero. The reigning International League Batter of the Week ripped a go-ahead two-run single in the inning off RHP David Goforth (2-2, 4.34) to give the Knights a 3-1 lead. That was all the Knights needed the rest of the way.
Relievers Juan Minaya (1.0 IP) and Thyago Vieira (1.0 IP) combined to hold the Chiefs scoreless over the final two innings to slam the door on Charlotte's 26th victory of the season. Vieira struck-out two in the top of the ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.
Before the game on Thursday, the Knights inducted former Charlotte slugger and current Syracuse hitting coach Brian Daubach into the Charlotte Baseball Round Table of Honor.
Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and the Knights will open a three-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) from BB&T Ballpark. After the game, fans can enjoy post-game fireworks courtesy of BB&T and News Talk 1110 WBT.
Pre-game radio coverage of Friday's 7:04 p.m. game will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and CharlotteKnights.com from BB&T Ballpark. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action. RHP Michael Kopech will take the mound for Charlotte in the opener.
