Columbus Clippers News Release
The Columbus Clippers dropped the finale of their series with the Norfolk Tides this afternoon at Huntington Park, 7-4.
Norfolk used a six-run eighth inning to power themselves to victory. Despite today's loss, the Clippers still took the series, 2-1.
Clippers' starter Adam Plutko had it going on early, allowing one hit over the first three innings, but Norfolk was able to get to him in the fourth. Drew Dosch deposited a double to right, and it looked like Caleb Joseph, coming in to score, was going to be gunned down easily at the plate, but he popped up from his slide early and evaded catcher Eric Haase's tag to make it 1-0.
Columbus delivered in the home half of the fourth when Bradley Zimmer tied the ballgame with a solo homerun, and Adam Rosales lofted a fly ball to score new Clipper Drew Maggi, giving his squad a 2-1 lead.
Plutko was fantastic with the lead after that, tossing six innings, allowing just the one run on three hits, with no walks and five strikeouts.
Louis Head took over for Plutko in the seventh and allowed the first two men he faced on via singles, but proceeded to roll up a double play and a groundout to escape the inning with the 2-1 lead intact.
The Clippers added run in the bottom of the seventh, with two on and two out, when Todd Hankins singled to left, making it 3-1.
Columbus reliever Jack Leathersich inherited a one out, bases loaded jam from Head in the eighth and proceeded to walk in a run, making it 3-2.
Cam Hill then took over for Leathersich and allowed a RBI single to Joseph, tying the game at 3-3. He then induced what looked to be an inning-ending double play, but Joseph was called safe at second base, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The next batter, Andrew Susac drilled a three-run shot to make it 7-3.
The Clippers rebounded with one run in the bottom of the eighth after Brandon Barnes worked a two-out walk. He was scored on a Rosales double into the right-center gap to make it 7-4.
Norfolk's bullpen stood tall after that, quieting the Columbus bats to finish off the 7-4 victory.
The Clippers will welcome the Buffalo Bisons to Huntington Park for the first of a three-game series tomorrow at 7:15 p.m.
