Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (29-53) picked up three runs in the first inning to take a lead over the Memphis Redbirds (52-32), but the bullpen faltered in a 7-3 loss at Principal Park on Monday night.

Memphis wasted no time getting to Jen-Ho Tseng, recording two runs in the first inning courtesy of a Luke Voit double. This was the third time this series Memphis has been able to score a pair of runs in the first inning.

The I-Cubs responded quickly with a Victor Caratini sac fly and was boosted by a Jason Vosler home run over the right field wall as Iowa took a 3-2 in the bottom of the first.

After the two runs in the first inning, Tseng quieted the Redbirds over the next 4.0 frames to finish with a final line of 5.0 innings, five hits, two runs, three walks and seven strikeouts, before leaving the game with a 3-2 lead.

Carl Edwards Jr. (0-1) - on a major league rehab assignment - took the sixth, but was unable to finish the inning as he gave up a pair of runs on no hits, two walks, one hit batter and a wild pitch. James Norwood followed Edwards and helped get out of the jam by getting the final out in the frame, but the Redbirds regained a 4-3 lead in the inning. Edwards would end up with the loss.

The I-Cubs had a wild seventh which consisted of Stephen Bruno and Manager Marty Pevey being ejected on a controversial called third strike. With two outs, Mark Zagunis, Chesny Young and Caratini all reached to load the bases before Taylor Davis narrowly missed a grand slam for an inning-ending fly out.

The Redbirds added three runs in the ninth on a bases-clearing double from Rangel Ravelo for insurance. Zagunis added another hit in the ninth inning and matched his career high with four hits, but the I-Cubs couldn't plate a run and fell 7-3.

Iowa has now fallen to 1-10 on the year against Memphis and will try and avoid the sweep tomorrow night with a 7:08 p.m. first pitch. Pre-game festivities will include the I-Cubs' 10th-annual naturalization ceremony where 30 candidates hailing from 17 countries will be sworn in as U.S. citizens. The game will be followed by a holiday fireworks show. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
