Shaw's extra inning blast a walk-off winner
July 3, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, CA - Trailing by one and down to their final out in the 10th inning, Chris Shaw launched a 437-foot homer to right-center to lift the Sacramento River Cats (38-46) over the Fresno Grizzlies (48-35) by a final score of 4-3.
After stringing together a few hits in the second inning, Mac Williamson scored on a groundout to give the River Cats an early 1-0 lead. Then, trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning, Chase d'Arnaud stayed hot with a game-tying RBI double to send the game into extra innings. With Eury Perez on second base with two outs in the tenth inning, Shaw ended the game with one swing of the bat, crushing his team-high 16th long ball of 2018.
Giants' right-hander Jeff Samardzija looked sharp in his fourth and longest rehab start for Sacramento. Samardzija allowed just two runs on five hits in six innings with three strikeouts, throwing 90 pitches (54 strikes).
In the series finale tomorrow, the River Cats try to keep things rolling behind left-hander Matt Gage (4-6, 5.54). They'll face off against right-hander Cy Sneed (7-4, 3.33) for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (PT). Catch all of the action live online at rivercats.com, on the MiLB First Pitch app, and on the air on Money 105.FM.
Additional Notes
- The River Cats are now 3-0 in extra-inning games at home this season and improve to 2-40 when trailing after the eighth inning.
- Manny Parra struck out three batters in two innings while surrendering just one hit in an exceptional relief appearance.
- After another strong inning out of the bullpen, right-hander Tyler Beede struck out one batter and has not allowed an earned run since June 17 against New Orleans.
