
Inferno Nip Blades 6-5 in a Shootout

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (35-23-14) were upended by the Columbia Inferno (47-23-2) 6-5 in overtime in front of a sold out crowd of 7,181 at TECO Arena on Saturday night. Columbia forward Robin Carruthers notched two goals in the Inferno victory. The Everblades will play the Greenville Grrrowl in the Southeast Divisional Wild Card Game at TECO Arena on Tuesday, April 1st at 7:30 PM.
The Inferno got on the board first after Robin Carruthers notched a power play goal at the 2:45 mark of the first period. The Everblades came right back and made it 1-1 on Joe Blaznek's team leading 34th goal of the season. The Inferno then grabbed a 2-1 lead after Shawn Wansborough picked up his 21st goal of the season.
Florida then tied the game at 2-2 in the second period after Ryan Murphy slipped the puck into an open net at the 16:19 mark. The Everblades then grabbed a 3-2 lead after Keith Anderson flipped a backhand shot over Columbia Inferno netminder Josh Blackburn at the 17:44 mark of the period. The Inferno came back and tied the game at 3-3 after forward Rejean Stringer picked up a loose rebound and fired it into the net at the 18:55 mark of the period.
In the third period, Florida grabbed a 4-3 lead after Don Smith picked up his 13th goal of the season. The Inferno then tied the game at 4-4 after Clint Way slipped a rebound past Florida netminder Randy Petruk at the 4:33 mark of the period. Everblades forward Don Smith then gave Florida a 5-4 lead after he tipped in a George Awada pass at the 15:12 mark of the third period. However, the Inferno picked up their third power play goal of the game after forward Robin Carruthers notched his second goal of the game.
After a scoreless overtime, Inferno forward Barrie Moore scored the lone goal to give the Inferno the extra point in the standings.
Florida goaltender Randy Petruk (3-2-1) stopped 47 of 52 shots he faced while Columbia netminder Josh Blackburn (19-11-2) stopped 40 of 45 shots he faced. The Everblades were 1 for 4 on the power play while the Inferno were 3 for 8.
The Blades take on the Greenville Grrrowl in the single elimination Southeastern Divisional Wild Card game at TECO Arena on Tuesday, April 1st. The puck drops at 7:30 PM.
