Roanoke Express News Release

ROANOKE, VA – The East Coast Hockey League announced today that Roanoke Express forward Jason Jaffray has been named the 2002-03 CCM/ECHL Rookie of The Year. The end-of-season award is the third Jaffray has received this year, also being named to the All-Rookie Team and the All-ECHL First Team. Jaffray becomes the first Roanoke Express player to win the Rookie of The Year honor.

The 21-year-old Olds, Alberta native currently leads all rookies in scoring with 84 points, having picked up 33 goals and 51 assists in 62 games. His point total also ranks seventh overall in the league. Jaffray has enjoyed a phenomenal rookie campaign, which included being named a starter for the Northern Conference in the 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game.

"What Jason has accomplished this season is nothing short of amazing." Express Head Coach Tony MacAulay said. "Jason made an immediate impact to this team right from the start. It has been a joy and a privilege to have watched him grow and improve this season, he has definitely earned this honor."

After going pointless in the first game of the season, Jaffray reeled off a point-scoring streak of ten games. Overall, he scored points in 25 of Roanoke's first 28 games. Some of his highlights from this season have included a five-point game on November 2 vs. Augusta, notching his first professional hat-trick on November 26 at Reading, and becoming the first player in ECHL history to be named the Rookie of the Month twice in one season, earning the honor in November and December.

Jaffray becomes the first non-goaltender to win the award since the 1997-98 season.
