Aces Avoid Shutout but Drop Third Straight

March 29, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

BAKERSFIELD, California – Jamie Cooke scored twice, J.J. Wrobel had a goal and two assists, and Kevin St. Pierre stopped 31 of 32 shots as Bakersfield defeated Anchorage for the second time in six days, 3-1, before 6,802 Friday night at Centennial Garden.

Anchorage suited up only 12 skaters for the match, as a result of suspensions to Dave Csumrik, Jason Modopoulos, Jason Boily, and Ruslan Batyrshin, as well as an illness that kept forwards B.J. Young and Ty Jones out of the lineup. Yet the Aces dominated much of the first period, registering 11 of the game's first 14 shots on goal, although the Condors were able to scratch out a 1-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes on Jamie Cooke's 29th of the year, which followed a perfect centering pass from behind the net by former Ace J.J. Wrobel at 14:19.

Wrobel set up Cooke for the second time four and a half minutes into the second period, then scored off a loose puck in front at 10:15 on a Bakersfield power play for a 3-0 bulge entering the final period. Yvan Corbin prevented Anchorage from being blanked for the second straight game when he notched his league-leading 45th goal of the year with 10:38 left in regulation. The Aces had a couple of third period power play chances, but finished the evening 0-for-7 on the man advantage. Anchorage has lost 16 of its last 18 road games and set a franchise record with its 45th loss overall.

Earlier in the day, the Aces signed 6-1, 197-pound defenseman Corey LeClair out of the Ontario Hockey League, where he had 11 assists in 59 games with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, who were eliminated from the playoffs Wednesday night, allowing the 19-year-old to arrive in Bakersfield in time for Friday's game. LeClair competed in the 2002 Memorial Cup for the host Guelph Storm.

Anchorage (20-45-3 overall, 8-6-1 under Perry Florio) heads to Long Beach for two games against the Ice Dogs, Saturday at 6:00 p.m. AST and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. AST, in a series that likely will decide the fifth-place spot in the WCHL standings. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
