Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 12, 2008)-The Columbia Inferno (15-15-4-4, 38 points) used dynamite performances from Steve McJannet, Daniel Sparre and All-Star Tyler Doig to beat the Florida Everblades (20-13-3-0, 43 points) 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Sparre gave the Inferno a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the first period when he took passes from Steve McJannet and Doig and tucked a wraparound past Everblades goalie Justin Peters. Defenseman Reid Cashman pushed the Inferno to a 2-0 lead at 6:36 when his power play wrister from the point beat a screened Peters. Jeff Miles and Peter Tsimikalis collected the assists. The Everblades cut that led in half, however, when Kirk MacDonald beat Jeff Jakaitis on the power play at the 12:56 mark.
Doig regained the two-goal lead for the Inferno with help from Sparre and defenseman Todd Perry midway through the second period when he skated into the slot, split the defenders, and fired a shot through Peters' legs. Tyson Marsh pushed the lead to 4-1 when he tapped a backhand rebound past Peters. Doig and McJannet earned the assists.
The game took a turn for the odd when Peters fought Doig at 17:36 of the second period. When Doig skated through the goalie's crease on a routine play, Peters shook off his gloves and tackled Doig to the ice, earning a fighting major and game misconduct in the process. David Shantz replaced Peters in the Everblades' net.
Florida came back at 5:08 in the third period to cut the Inferno's lead 4-2 when David Comacchia's wrister from the point beat Jakaitis. The Blades came to within one goal at 9:18 of the final frame when Kirk MacDonald skated in by the near boards and flicked the puck up and over Jakaitis' glove. The Everblades continued to launch shots at the Inferno net, but Jakaitis stood tall and preserved the win, finishing with 25 saves on 28 shots for the game. Peters stopped 13 of 17 and received 15 penalty minutes, while Shantz stopped all 11 shots he faced.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Friday, Jan. 18 to host the Texas Wildcatters for NASCAR Night. SPRINT Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson's showcar and Jeff Gordon's race simulator will be on hand for the game, and all fans wearing NASCAR gear will receive $3 off their tickets.
