Indianapolis gets past Norfolk
August 7, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Christian Walker homered and drove in three, but Norfolk's late comeback fell just short in a 6-5 loss to Indianapolis Friday night at Harbor Park.
Norfolk trailed the contest 6-1 entering the eighth inning before Walker ignited a late rally. He opened the eighth inning with an opposite-field solo homer - his 12th home run of the season - before lacing a two-out, two-run double in a three-run ninth inning that pulled the Tides within 6-5. Indianapolis closer Blake Wood escaped the final threat, however, striking out Dariel Alvarez for the final out of the game and giving the Tribe the win in the opener of the three-game set.
With his three runs batted in Friday, Walker now has 23 RBI since the All-Star break, second-most in the International League.
The Indians jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning, as they plated three runs on three hits and a walk against Eddie Gamboa (8-9). Indianapolis extended their lead against Gamboa in the third, as an RBI single by Elias Diaz made it 4-0.
Gamboa went on to take the loss after allowing six runs on six hits and six walks in 4.1 innings of work. Norfolk's bullpen of Dana Eveland, Steve Johnson, and Pedro Beato turned in a strong effort, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out three over 4.2 shutout innings of relief.
After Friday's action, Norfolk (66-48) and Indianapolis (65-47) are now virtually tied for the best record in the International League.
The two clubs continue their three-game set Saturday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:05. Terry Doyle (1-0, 2.25) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by former Orioles farmhand Radhames Liz (3-4, 1.25).
Saturday is Navy Night at Harbor Park, as the Tides honor the brave men and women who serve in the Navy. There will also be a postgame fireworks show, presented by Navy Mutual.
