Toledo Mud Hens News Release

It was a beautiful night for baseball in Toledo on Friday, and prior to the game the organization honored their home run king, Mike Hessman in an on field pregame ceremony. The commemeration was highlighted with congratulatory videos from former Hens' teammates as well as Tigers' GM Al Avila. The Detroit Tigers and Toledo Mud Hens also honored Hessman's feat with a couple of celebratory gifts, as the sold out crowd held their #433 posters high for the Toledo legend. After the ceremony wrapped up, the Hens sent Thad Weber to the hill, as the veteren looked for his seventh win of the season.

The first place RailRiders had other ideas as they got the scoring started early in the top of the first as Rob Refsnyder sent a Weber offering over the wall for a home run to take the 1-0 lead. Aaron Judge followed the one run first with a homer of his own in the second as it looked as if it might be a short evening for Weber. However, after the rough start the right hander settled down and silenced the SWB offense in innings four through seven, fininshing with a quality start. Weber exited after 7.0 innings, surrendering three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

The Hens offense was quiet for the first portion of the game as Chris Capuano kept the offense hitless through four. In the sixth the Toledo lineup put together a small rally thanks to back to back walks drawn by Dixon Machado and Marc Krauss. With a runner in scoring position the man of the hour, Mike Hessman, came through with a line drive RBI single to left field bringing around Machado and closing the gap to 3-1.

The one run sixth was the only scoring threat put together by Toledo, until the bottom of the ninth as Corey Jones led off the final frame with a pinch hit double. Jones then came around to score on an RBI groundout from Alexi Casilla, but the rally fell short as Andrew Baily collected his second save for SWB.

The series resumes on Saturday night between the two squads as first pitch is set for 7:00 PM. The Hens' organization will honor the 2005 Governor's Cup Championship team before the game, commemorating the ten year anniversary of the title run.
