Buxton Tallies Three Hits in Loss at Charlotte

Rochester Red Wings News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - Byron Buxton had three hits in his first rehab game since injuring his left thumb but Matt Tuiasosopo hit three home runs and the Charlotte Knights outslugged the Rochester Red Wings 9-5 Friday night at BB&T Ballpark.

Buxton sprained his left thumb for Minnesota sliding into second base on a stolen base attempt on June 23 vs. Chicago-AL. He made his Triple-A debut tonight after skipping Rochester, jumping from Double-A Chattanooga all the way to the big leagues on June 13. He finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI while serving as the designated hitter for the Red Wings (57-56).

The Knights (61-53) received plenty of offense from Tuiasosopo, who drove in seven runs along with going deep three times.

Rochester actually led 2-0 as Danny Santana drove in Buxton to open the scoring and James Beresford scored on a groundout by Danny Ortiz. But, as is the case in Charlotte's bandbox of a ballpark, no lead is safe. Tuiasosopo hit a three-run homer before an out was recorded off of Pat Dean (8-10). The Knights added another run and led 4-2 through one inning.

Tuiasosopo hit a solo shot in the second to extend the Charlotte advantage to 5-2. The Red Wings drew closer in the fifth as Santana, with two outs, singled, stole second and scored on a Reynaldo Rodriguez single to bring the Wings within a pair.

Dean began the seventh inning and the first three batters reached on a fielder error and two singles. Cole Johnson entered and surrendered Tuiasosopo's third long ball of the night to put the game away. Dean was charged with eight runs - seven earned - on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

A comeback came much too late but Rochester started the ninth with three straight hits, the last by Buxton to plate a run, and Beresford drove in a run with a fielder's choice to cap the scoring.

Despite the offensive advantage playing at BB&T Ballpark offers, the Red Wings did not record an extra-base hit in the loss. They finished 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
