IceMen Thwarted by Rallying Wings in Overtime
March 4, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Leading 4-2 entering the final period of play, the Evansville IceMen, could not close out the Kalamazoo Wings who rallied to win 5-4 in overtime. Mark Anthoine, Jarret Lukin, Justin MacDonald, and Thomas Frazee all had two points for the IceMen (13-35-4-3, 33 points) in the loss. MacDonald now has five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in three games with the IceMen.
Evansville put one in the back of the net first. Frazee made a pass to Braden Pimm behind the net. Pimm took a shot that Joel Martin stopped, but the puck was loose in the crease. Pimm found his own rebound and torched it past Martin to give the IceMen a 1-0 lead. Lukin earned an assist on Pimm's 20th of the season and second with the IceMen.
Midway through the opening period, Kalmazoo tied it up. Matt Caria stole the puck and passed it to Michael Neal all alone in front of the net. Neal tucked in his 12th of the season to tie it at one.
On their first power play of the game, the IceMen answered. Lukin won the faceoff back to Bo Driscoll. The rookie sent the puck along the boards to MacDonald. The FHL's leading goal scorer found Mark Anthoine right in front of the net. Anthoine blistered in his fifth of the season to make it a 2-1 IceMen lead after one.
Early in the second period, the Wings fought back. A pass in the IceMen zone bounced off the skates of Neal and right to Gergo Nagy at the side of the net. Nagy put in the point blank try to knot it at two.
For the second time in the game, the IceMen power play would recapture the lead for Evansville. MacDonald zipped a cross-crease pass to Thomas Frazee charging to the net. Frazee potted his 14th of the season to give the IceMen a 3-2 advantage. Anthoine added a helper on Frazee's second goal in Evansville.
The IceMen made it a two-goal game later in the middle frame. Lukin hit the hard charging Brandon Martell with a laser pass. Martell smacked a shot past Martin to make it a 4-2 IceMen lead. A former Kalamazoo Wing, Martell lit the lamp for the second time against his old team and the sixth time this season.
In the third period, Kalamazoo netted a pair of power play goals on Ludwig Blomstrand deflections to knot it up at four. Neither team could break the tie in regulation so overtime was needed.
Just 55 seconds into the extra frame, Kalamazoo pocketed the win. Ray Kaunisto found Justin Taylor alone in front of the net. Taylor slipped it past Chris Driedger to give the Wings a 5-4 comeback win. Driedger made 27 saves in his first game with the IceMen since being returned by the Ottawa Senators of the NHL.
