IceCats Defenseman Selected Starter for All-Star Classic
January 26, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Worcester IceCats News Release
WORCESTER, MA â The American Hockey League (AHL) today announced the 2005 Canadian AHL All-Star team roster for the midseason classic in Manchester, New Hampshire on February 14th. The team, comprised of players born in Canada, will include IceCats defenseman Dennis Wideman, and through on-line balloting at theahl.com, the sensational rookie was selected a starter.
Wideman, a 21-year old from Kitchener, Ontario, is currently tied for the IceCats team lead with 18 assists and 26 points. The total points are good enough for sixth best on the league's defensemen and rookie leaderboards. His 18 assists, meanwhile, are tied for second in that category among the AHL's first year players. The Blues free agent signing made an early impression on the circuit with a five-point effort in just his second professional game. He went on to win the AHL's Rookie of the Month for October and has added five more multipoint games to his tab.
With the starting nod, Wideman will become only the fourth player in the âCats 11 year history, and the first rookie, to start an All-Star Classic. The other Worcester starters were Rory Fitzpatrick (1998), Marty Reasoner (2000) and Eric Boguniecki (2002).
IceCats All-Star game participants through the years include: Roy Mitchell (1995), Eric Fichaud (1996), Jamie Rivers (1996, 1997), Terry Virtue (1997, 2004 captain), Bob Lachance (1997), Michal Handzus (1998), Lubos Bartecko (1999), Ladislav Nagy (2000), Marty Reasoner (2000), Dwayne Roloson (2001), Peter Smrek (2001), Justin Papineau (2002, 2003), Eric Boguniecki (2002) and Sergei Varlamov (2003).
The PlanetUSA roster is expected to be announced tomorrow.
The 2005 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic will take place at the Verizon Wireless Arena, home of the AHL's Manchester Monarchs. The event gets underway on Sunday, February 13th, with the 2005 AHL All-Star Skills Competition at 7:00 PM. The annual All-Star Game follows at 7:00 PM on Monday, February 14th, and will be televised live nationally on ESPN2 in the United States and on Rogers Sportnet in Canada.
