Amerks Double up the Dogs

HAMILTON, ON - With four goals in the first period and 42 saves by goaltender Ryan Miller, the Rochester Americans defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-2 on Wednesday night at Copps Coliseum.

Rochester had a strong first period by scoring four consecutive goals. The Amerks goal scorers were Thomas Vanek (4:30), Chris Taylor (8:07), Derek Roy (11:41) and Nathan Paetsch (14:19). After the third goal, Dan Ellis replaced Yann Danis between the pipes for Hamilton.

Hamilton got on the scoreboard at 1:38 of the second period when captain Jason Ward posted his tenth goal of the season and 100th point as a Bulldog. Corey Locke and Andrei Kostitsyn recorded assists on the goal. Ward becomes the eleventh Bulldogs player to reach the 100-point plateau.

The Bulldogs added a late goal on the power play at 19:23 of the third period when Ward scored his second goal of the night. Tomas Plekanec and Steve Ott added assists on the final goal of the game.

Bulldogs goaltender Dan Ellis was solid in relief of Yann Danis making 14 saves on 15 shots.

Rochester netminder Ryan Miller was named the game's first star after stopping 42 of 44 shots, while picking up his league leading 24th win.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Americans 44-24 and were 1-4 on the power play, while Rochester scored on their only power play opportunity.

The Bulldogs next game is the Ninth Annual 'TD Canada Trust Smiles On Ice Game' on Friday, January 28th, versus the Syracuse Crunch. Proceeds from the game will go to "Smiles on Ice" in support of McMaster Children's Hospital.
