LONG BEACH, Calif. - The second place Long Beach Ice Dogs (34-23-9) overcame a letdown to win 6-5 in a shootout over the third place Bakersfield Condors (34-25-5) Saturday night. The game began with Keith MCWIlliams giving Long Beach a 1-0 lead with the first goal of his professional career at 2:02 of the contest. Newcomer Jason Weaver and Mike Vellinga got the assists. Then at 6:45, the Condors tied it up on the power play by Kevin St. Jacques from Joel Irving and Dave Bonk. But just 16 seconds later, Cory Urquhart put Long Beach up 2-1 with his 21st of the season from Steeve Villenueve and Justin Aikins. Then at 9:59 it was a 3-1 game when Weaver scored from Ben Knopp and Mac Faulkner.
Just 1:15 into the second period, Bakersfield made it a 3-2 game when Bonk scored on the power play from Mathieu Brunelle and Steve Howard. At 5:30 it was all tied up when Alexandre Bolduc scored on the power play from Kevin Truelson and Kevin Kotyluk. Bakersfield then took a 4-3 lead with a shorthanded goal by Bonk. The Ice Dogs capped a busy second period by tying it up at 18:56 by Justin Aikins from Sean McAslan and Michael Lambert.
Bakersfield regained the lead 1:23 into the third period with their third power play goal of the night, this time by Truelson from Scott Balan. Trailing 5-4 late in the game, Aikins scored with 1:12 remaining from Urquhart and Dave Cousineau to tie it up and send the game into overtime.
After a scoreless sudden death overtime period, Michael Lambert scored the game winner in the shootout for Long Beach. It was their first win in the last four games. Olivier Michaud got the win with 31 saves, while Ryan Munce took the overtime loss with 22 saves. The Ice Dogs were 0-5 on the power play while the Ice Dogs' number two ranked penalty killing unit gave up 3 goals on 8 opportunities to Bakersfield.
