Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The South Carolina Stingrays held on for a 4-3 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Trailing 4-1 in the third, Milan Gajic got the Gladiators within a goal with six minutes left in the third but Gwinnett could get no closer.
South Carolina took an early 1-0 lead on a power play goal 7:19 into the first period. Wide open just a couple of feet inside the Gladiators zone, Craig Olynick walked in on Gladiators goaltender Sean Field and ripped a snap shot up underneath the crossbar for the marker. Anders Strome and Evan Schwabe collected the assists on the power play marker.
Schwabe gave the Stingrays a 2-0 lead with South Carolina's second power play goal of the game. Fields came out of his crease to cut down the angle on Nate Kiser's slap shot from the point, but the defenseman only got a piece of the puck and it rolled right to Schwabe on the doorstep for the tally. Likit Anderson also collected an assist on the power play goal with 2:17 left in the first.
Scott Mifsud got the Gladiators within a goal 3:57 into the second period. Mifsud walked in over the South Carolina blue line and whipped a snap shot over the shoulder of Stingrays netminder Davis Parley for the goal. Jon Awe posted an assist on the goal getting the puck up ice to Mifsud to set up the tally. Brad Schell also had a helper on the power play goal.
South Carolina got the goal back with their third power play goal of the game. Cail MacLean finished a flurry in front of the Gwinnett net, punching the puck past Fields for the tally. Danny O'Brien and Schwabe had the helpers on the goal.
South Carolina pushed their lead back to three goals on Schwabe's second goal of the night. Schwabe took an outlet pass from Darren Lynch and beat Fields on a breakaway for the goal 1:17 into the third.
Milan Gajic got the Gladiators within a goal as he posted a pair of markers within a minute of each other, making it 4-3 in favor of South Carolina. His first came at the 12:38 mark of the third as he redirected Brian Teixeira's centering pass behind Parley for the tally, bringing the Gladiators within a goal. Lane Manson also had an assist on the marker.
Gajic's second came 60 seconds later, ripping a backhand past Parley to cut the Stingrays lead to one. Matt York and Scott Mifsud collected the assists on the goal, setting up Gajic in the slot.
Gwinntt out shot the Stingrays in the loss by a 34-32 margin as South Carolina converted three of their eight power play chances in the contest. The league's top ranked power play converted just once on seven man advantage chances.
