
Checkers clinch Kelly Cup berth

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers clinched a Kelly Cup Playoff berth on Saturday. After picking up a win over Greenville on Friday, the Checkers got some help from Augusta as the Lynx defeated the Columbia Inferno which secured a playoff appearance for the second straight year, and the ninth time in 13 seasons in the ECHL, for the Checkers.
Charlotte, with 65 points, currently holds the fifth spot in the South Division and a three-point lead over Augusta. The Checkers have five games remaining and it is possible for Charlotte to jump ahead of South Carolina which has 71 points with eight games left to play.

Monday, March 20, 2006 vs. Augusta, L, 3-6 The Augusta Lynx scored the final four goals of the game en route to a 6-3 win over the Charlotte Checkers Monday night in front of 3,455 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Nicolas Corbeil had two goals and two assists to lead the Lynx over the Checkers.
Wednesday, March 22, 2006 vs. Gwinnet, L, 1-8 The Gwinnett Gladiators scored on five power plays en route to a 8-1 victory over the Charlotte Checkers Wednesday night in front of 3,929 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Guillaume Desbiens scored twice on the night as seven different Gladiators scored.
Gwinnett's Jeff Campbell scored the only goal of the first period on the power play. The Gladiators extended their lead as they scored five goals in the second period.
Friday, March 24, 2006 vs. Greenville, W, 6-2 Rick Kozak recorded a hat trick to lead the Charlotte Checkers past the Greenville Grrrowl 6-2 in front of 7,941 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena Friday night.
Charlotte rallied in the second period to score three goals and take a 5-2 lead. Kozak notched his second and third goals of the night at the 00:58 and 10:24 mark of the second period, respectively. Kozak's first goal came at the 8:18 mark of the first period.
Saturday, March 25, 2006 vs. Florida, L, 1-3 The Florida Everblades used two third-period goals to beat the Charlotte Checkers 3-1 Saturday night in front of 9,109 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Kevin Bergin lead the Everblades with a hand in each goal for Florida.
