Bombers game cancelled
March 26, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- The Bombers and the Toledo Storm arrived to the rink expecting to play a hockey game this afternoon and for the first 15 minutes of the opening period they did.
Then all of a sudden the game came to a halt when referee Nick Suhy noticed that the ice was starting to melt near the crease and end line areas of the nets. The Nutter Center staff came out onto the ice to attend to the problem, and in doing so they realized it was not just a simple fix, so both teams were sent to the locker room and the plan was to play the remaining 5:53 of the first period after the zamboni covered the ice, take a two minute break to switch sides and then start the second period of play.
The Bombers had 1-0 lead thanks in part to Paul Kelly before the teams were taken off the ice, then after the teams came back out; Ken Magowan tied it up at 1-1. It would stay that way through the end of the 5:53 of the first, then as instructed the teams stopped to switch sides and began playing the second period, but play was halted again due to the ice conditions.
There were a number of stoppages of play in the second period, but the game went on and Toledo took the lead at 2-1 on a goal by Matt Schmidt. Following the go ahead goal, both teams were starting to get into a comfort zone as far as the game was concerned, but this time Suhy found a gouge behind the net that could not be fixed to allow the game to continue.
So both teams left the ice not knowing when or if the game would be rescheduled. After the game both teams talked with the league and it was determined that the game will be made up on this Wednesday March 22nd. The game will start at 7:00 PM, but will begin with 12:03 left in the second period and Toledo leading 2-1.
Fans who attended this afternoon's game can redeem their ticket and get in to the Wednesday game for free. Also if the Bombers come from behind and win, tickets will be honored for April 8th Fan Appreciation night - the final Bombers game of the 2005-2006 season.
To all fans attending the Wednesday make-up game, there will be free parking, popcorn and hot dogs will only be $1.00, adult silver seat tickets will only be $7.00 and there will be an extended skate with the Bombers players after the game and free McDonalds spicy chicken sandwiches for the first 1,000 fans as well.
The Bombers continue their 15th Anniversary season vs. Johnstown on Friday night at 7:00pm at the EJ Nutter Center, as they take on the Johnstown Chiefs. The game can be heard on 980 (am) Homer the Sports Animal or on line at www.daytonbombers.com. Dayton Bombers Hockey, celebrating 15 years of fun.
