Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Stockton, CA - The Victoria Salmon Kings were stunned by the Stockton Thunder in game one, but battled back in game two of the series to win 3-2 in front of the rumbling 8,675 fans, and earn their third win on the road this week.
Defenseman Simon Mangos warmed up the scoreboard at 7:20 into the first period, beating Netminder Jake Moreland from ten feet out in the slot. Steve Roberts and Lanny Gare worked the puck out from behind the net and fed Mangos for his 8th goal of the season.
Still in the first, Taggart Desmet streaked down the right wing and spotted Steve Roberts through the left circle, and Roberts tallied his sixth point in the last four games-his 12th goal of the season-chipping the puck past Moreland for a Salmon Kings 2-0 lead.
Before the intermission, with 2:28 remaining, Forward Mike Lalonde scored his 26th goal of the season with a 15-foot wrist shot after a quick transition by the Thunder. The Salmon Kings led 2-1 after the first frame.
Victoria held off the Thunder in three consecutive penalty kills, including a two man advantage, to maintain their lead in the second period. Victoria Goaltender B.J. Boxma made 13 saves in the second, and the total shot count after two periods favoured Stockton 22-20.
The Salmon Kings sizzled in the third period and added another goal for the 3-1 lead at 6:21. Rookie Elias Godoy capped off a long pass from Adam Taylor with a one-timer from the doorstep for his third point in three games.
The Thunder leading goal scorer Mike Lalonde netted a short handed goal with two seconds remaining in the game, but Stockton fell short, and Victoria captured the season series 3-1-1.
Both Victoria and Stockton finished 0-6 on the power play. Boxma earned 5th win of the season, and Moreland posted his 17th loss. Stockton and Victoria tied 32-32 in total shots.
The Salmon Kings will play game five of their road trip in Fresno on Monday, March 27, and return home briefly before heading to Alaska for a two game series starting March 31.
