I-Cubs Walk All over Chasers in 9-3 Loss

Omaha, NEB. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (12-8) suffered a 9-3 loss in the series opener with I-80 rival Iowa Cubs (7-12), with the Cubs taking advantage of ten walks by the Chasers pitching staff, tied for the most in a game by Omaha since the 2008 season. In the last 80 meetings between Omaha and Iowa, the two teams have split the games right down the middle at 40-40.

Iowa jumped all over Storm Chasers starter Nate Adcock, who lasted only two-thirds of the first inning but not before the Cubs plated six runs by capitalizing on four walks by the right-hander. The 0.2 innings was tied for the shortest start of Adcock's career with a pair of outings during his days with the High Desert Mavericks (Seattle Mariners High-A), and Adcock has allowed 13 runs in four total innings during his two career starts against Iowa. The six-run first was the most runs allowed by the Chasers in an inning this season.

Omaha attempted to come back from the early deficit with second baseman Johnny Giavotella smacking a solo homer in the first inning, his second of the season. Giavotella has at least one hit in 14 of the last 15 games and is currently riding his second hitting streak of at least seven games this season, the longest by any Storm Chasers player in the 2013 campaign. Omaha got as close as they would in the entire game at 6-3 when catcher Adam Moore knocked in two runs on a two-out bases loaded single in the fifth inning. Moore had one hit in his previous 18 at-bats before the multi-RBI hit.

Left-handed relievers Everett Teaford and Francisley Bueno kept Omaha within striking distance by pitching a combined 5.1 scoreless innings after Adcock's exit, but the Cubs put the game away by scoring a run in each of the final three innings. The Storm Chasers are 5-3 in their last eight homestand openers, with Iowa accounting for all three losses. The division rival I-Cubs now own a 9-8 edge in the 17 games at Werner Park.

The Storm Chasers will look to shake off their second straight series-opening loss as they send out right-hander Brian Sanches (1-1, 5.93), who allowed five runs in 3.0 innings during his last outing after totaling only four earned runs in his first 10.2 innings of work this season. Sanches will face off Iowa left-hander Chris Rusin (1-2, 5.64) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on the third American Family Insurance Friday Fireworks game of the year.
