Iowa Cubs News Release

Papillion, NE - The Iowa Cubs (7-13) had a dramatic comeback to force extra innings, but lost on a walk-off single by Johnny Giavotella in the tenth that gave the Omaha Storm Chasers (13-8) at 5-4 win at Werner Park tonight. This series is tied at a game apiece and the Cubs are 2-4 on this road trip.

The Storm Chasers scored first against Cubs' starter Chris Rusin in the third inning. With one out, David Lough tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Christian Colon. The Cubs answered back against Storm Chasers' starter Chris Dwyer in the fourth. Brent Lillibridge led off with a double and Cedar Rapids native, Ryan Sweeney, followed with a home run to left. Sweeney has now hit safely in a team-high 12 straight games and is the first Cubs' player to homer in consecutive games this season. The lead was short-lived as former I-Cub Max Ramirez led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to tie the game at two.

Rusin worked through six innings and didn't allow another run to post his second quality start of the season. Dwyer held the Cubs to two runs through seven innings for his fourth consecutive quality start.

The Storm Chasers regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by Brandon Wood off Hisanori Takahashi and added an insurance run off Blake Parker in the eighth when Lough doubled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Giavotella.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Brian Bogusevic reached on an infield single for his third hit of the game. Bogusevic has hit safely in 11 straight games. The Storm Chasers brought in closer Michael Mariot and the Cubs countered with Algona native, Brad Nelson, off the bench to pinch-hit for Alberto Gonzalez. The Storm Chasers thought they had Nelson struck out on a check swing, but third base umpire Jordan Ferrell ruled that he held up from his spot near second base. Two pitches later, Nelson launched a game-tying home run to deep left-center. It was his fourth home run of the season and the Cubs' first pinch-hit homer since Jonathan Mota connected off the bench last year on May 9 at Fresno. Following the homer, Omaha manager Mike Jirschele was ejected by Ferrell for comments following up on the disputed check swing.

Parker struck out two in a scoreless ninth to force the Cubs into extra innings for the first time this season. The Cubs got two men on base in the top of the tenth, but Mariot (1-0) closed out the inning without allowing a run. Zach Putnam (0-1) came in to pitch the bottom of the tenth for the Cubs. Willy Taveras led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lough. Colon followed with a chopper down the third base line. Lillibridge made a sliding stop, but had no play, and the Storm Chasers had runners on first and second for Giavotella. He ripped a base hit right past the mound into center field, and Taveras raced home with the winning run.

The Cubs and Storm Chasers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Werner Park. RH Drew Carpenter (1-2, 5.68) will start for the Cubs against RH Brian Sanches (1-1, 5.93) for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
