Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - After Thursday night's contest got rained out, the Iowa Cubs (1-3) and Buffalo Bisons (3-1) met for a double header Friday evening. For the first time since 2018, Iowa got swept in the double header, dropping game one to the Bisons by a score of 7-2 and game two 1-0.

Dixon Machado started the first game with a single and would later come around to score on an RBI single from Robel Garcia, giving Iowa a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Unfortunately for Iowa, their lead wouldn't last very long, as the Bisons would score two runs of their own in the home half of the first.

Buffalo added one more in both the second and the third, extending their lead to 4-1 and knocking Iowa starter Adrian Sampson out of the game. On the other side, Buffalo's starter Casey Lawrence was untouchable after the first inning, not allowing another batter to reach base after Garcia's RBI single in the first.

Iowa got a run back in the sixth inning when Donnie Dewees stole home, but once again, Buffalo answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, growing their lead to 7-2. Matt Gage struck out the side in the seventh to end the game, giving Buffalo their second win of the season.

Mark Leiter Jr. started game two of the double header for Iowa, giving them their longest start of the young season. The righty spun four innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out seven.

The one run he allowed was one too many, as Buffalo's starter Shaun Anderson kept Iowa off the board with six scoreless innings. He allowed just four baserunners - three hits and a walk - while striking out eight.

Kyle Johnston surrendered a double to Trent Giambrone and a walk to Esteban Quiroz, but got Brennen Davis to ground out to end the game. With the final three outs in the seventh, Johnston earned his second save of the year and Buffalo's second win of the day, sweeping the double header against Iowa.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Casey Lawrence retired the final 13 batters he faced in game one, striking out six total I-Cubs hitters in the victory.

- Last season, the I-Cubs went 7-3 in double headers, sweeping two at home, splitting two at home, and splitting their only double header on the road. This marked their first double header of the 2022 season, and they were swept for the first time since August 22, 2018, when Iowa lost a pair to Colorado Springs.

- Stephen Gonsalves struck out five of the six batters he faced in the first game of the double header, tossing two scoreless frames in his Iowa Cubs debut.

- With his two singles tonight, Robel Garcia has now hit safely in all four games the I-Cubs have played. He leads the team with six hits on the season.

Iowa and Buffalo are set to play game five of their six-game series tomorrow afternoon with a 1:05 ET first pitch. The I-Cubs return to Principal Park for their home opener on Tuesday, April 12, against Toledo. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
