Worcester Red Sox News Release
JACKSONVILLE, F.L. - A grand slam from Franchy Cordero and solo shots from Johan Mieses and Jeter Downs powered the Worcester Red Sox (3-1) to an 8-4 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (1-3) on Friday night at 121 Financial Ballpark.
The WooSox have hit a league-leading 10 home runs through the first four games of the season.
Trailing 2-0 after two innings, Worcester scored eight unanswered runs starting with Cordero's bases-clearing blast. The WooSox loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of walks and a single before Cordero launched a first-pitch breaking ball over the fence in right to make it 4-2.
Johan Mieses extended the lead to 5-2 with a towering blast to left field in the sixth inning, and doubles from Roldani Baldwin and Downs added another run later in the frame.
Cordero doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning, and Downs capped the scoring with a solo blast to left field in the eighth, his first of the season.
Josh Winckowski (W, 1-0) produced Worcester's best start of the season, holding the Jumbo Shrimp to two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts. After allowing a solo home run to Lewin Diaz and an RBI groundout to Norel Gonzalez early on, Winckowski retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced.
The Worcester bullpen was solid for the third time in four games, with Geoff Hartlieb and Zack Kelly combining to throw three scoreless innings with just one hit allowed. Jacksonville rallied late with two runs in the ninth, but Kaleb Ort sealed the win by inducing three air outs in the final frame.
Triston Casas provided a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 with double, two runs, and two RBI.
The WooSox continue the six-game series in Jacksonville Saturday night, as Worcester's Brian Keller makes his season debut on the mound against Matthew Kent, a former Red Sox farmhand who pitched in three games for Worcester last year before signing with the Marlins. Radio coverage is live at 6:15 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
Following the opening week road trip, the WooSox return home to Polar Park for a six-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, beginning with the home opener on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:05 p.m. at Polar Park. Tickets are available at WooSox.com.
